The Young & the Restless Exclusive: Billy Flynn on Cane’s Arrest Fallout and War with Victor

Comments

The Young and the Restless threw a huge monkey wrench into the fight to save Malcolm’s (Shemar Moore) when the person slated to be his bone marrow donor, Cane Ashby, was arrested for corporate sabotage. Soap Opera Digest got the inside scoop on the fallout from this latest twist from Cane’s portrayer, Billy Flynn.

Match Games

Cane getting hauled off in handcuffs right when the clock is ticking to stop Malcolm’s aplastic anemia from claiming his life is far from perfect timing, but according to Flynn, Cane takes it in stride. “Everybody else is freaked out by it and what it’s going to mean, but I don’t think Cane is bothered by the arrest all that much,” he says. “In his eyes, he’s gonna do what he needs to do regardless. These charges don’t rally mean much to him. That’s how I kind of tried to play it, like, ‘I’m just going to stay calm in all this because I know that other people aren’t.'”

Topping that list is his ex-wife. “Lily [Christel Khalil], obviously, is going to be worried,” Flynn continues. “She’s scared about, ‘How are you still going to be able to get [your bone marrow] to Malcolm?'”

But Cane has no intention of letting anyone or anything stand in the way of saving Malcolm. “For Cane, it’s like, ‘Listen, whatever I need to do, if I need to jump bail, I don’t care what the consequences are gonna be. I told you I was going to do this, and that’s what I’m going to do.’ Cane is more of a ‘ask for forgiveness rather than permission’ kind of guy.”

What really gets Cane riled up is that his arrest was orchestrated by Victor (Eric Braeden). “The evidence was clearly made up by Victor, and that’s what pisses him off more, that Victor is still coming after him for whatever reason,” Flynn asserts. “His mindset goes more to, ‘This son of a bitch — now I’ve gotta go after him again?!’ I think Cane just wanted to be done with that. I mean, Cane hasn’t really done that much to these people! He maybe threatened them a little bit with the AI thing, but Victor used AI against him, Phyllis [Michelle Stafford] stole it and gave it to Victor, he took all of Cane’s company… Cane kind of pushed back a little bit and helped take Newman Enterprises, but ultimately, he’s like, ‘I gave it back! Why am I still looped into this?’ The inconvenience is Victor keeping this war alive.”

While Cane feels that the arrest “is just not what’s important right now,” explains Flynn, “he is going to fight it, sure. To him, it is what it is. He did it! Even if the evidence is made up, he still did the thing they’re saying he did. And if he is who he says he is, then he’s got to take it on the chin and move on. At this moment in his evolution, he is all about taking accountability and also showing Lily that, ‘I can pay for my sins.'”

Above all, Flynn says, “What Cane is concerned about is fixing things with Lily and saving Malcolm. Once that’s done, then he’ll worry about [potentially going to jail].”

For Lily, though, there’s nothing but worry. “I’m sure that when Lily first hears about these charges, her first instinct is probably to think, ‘Cane let me down again,'” muses the Y&R star. “And her stress is not going to be alleviated until everything is taken care of and the procedure is done. Cane tries to reassure her that everything is going to be fine and he tells her, ‘This is going to happen. I’m not going to let anything get in the way of me doing this.’ He gives her is word on that.”

Throughout the crisis, “Cane is an optimist,” notes the actor. “He feels that things are going to work out; they always do. The charges will figure themselves out, Malcolm’s going to get Cane’s bone marrow and he’s going to be fine. And he’s trying to convince Lily to believe that.”

But only time will tell if Cane’s optimism is warranted or if Victor’s latest trick will cost Malcolm his life…
