James Hyde Preps For Fatherhood

Comments

Soap Opera Digest: How did you find that out Sue-Ling was expecting?

James Hyde: We went in for a blood test. We weren’t doing the home-pregnancy-test thing because we decided that we wanted to know for sure. We went in in the morning and then we were at home, not sitting by the phone, but almost sitting by the phone, and they called up. I wanted my wife to answer the phone. She picked it up and went into the other room and then she came in crying, “We’re pregnant!” So, we jumped up and down like two kids, crying and sharing the moment.Digest: How did you celebrate?

Hyde: We have two [phone] lines, and I was on the phone with my family and she was on the phone with her family. Our families were with us through the whole journey, so we wanted to share it with them immediately. We went out that night to our favorite restaurant. We were glowing for days. Then, things were going through our heads, “Wow, we’ve got to do this and that.” Our main concern was for her to just take it easy for the first three months. We wanted her to really, really relax. Once we got through the first trimester, then we could breathe a little bit. Today, we went to an ultrasound and he has grown. He looks so beautiful right now, it’s amazing. It’s a miracle.Digest: Was it a natural conception?

Hyde: No, my wife and I went through in vitro. It’s been a long journey, but we’ve made it.Digest: So, you’re having a boy. Have you discussed names?

Hyde: James Moses is the name. My wife was going to name the girl and I had the great privilege to name the boy.Digest: Are you babying Sue-Ling?

Hyde: Yeah, moreso than ever. When we went through the whole process of in vitro, she had to be almost on bed rest. Now, I try to encourage her to get out more and exercise. That’s good for her right now.Digest: Are you getting a nursery ready?

Hyde: We’ve decided on a color and ordered the furniture. So, hopefully by the end of March or April, we’ll be done with the room.Digest: Are you nervous about being a dad?

Hyde: It’s amazing how the anxiety starts popping up in your head. Am I going to be able to support my family? That’s the first time that has ever happened to me. People keep telling us to enjoy your sleep-ins and enjoy being together. But my philosophy is certainly that’s true, but we’re going to have him be one of us and take him skiing and all that stuff, anyway. Sue-Ling and I are so ready for this. We’ve certainly traveled the world and seen a lot of things, and now it’s our turn to become life teachers. Hopefully, he’s going to be a good guy when he grows up.Digest: Are you reading any parenting books?

Hyde: You can sit there and read a zillion books and nothing is going to prepare you until the day he arrives. We do read books of what to expect. We’re reading Your Pregnancy Week by Week, and it gives us an insight as to what to expect. Sue-Ling’s mom is going to come in and help us out the first month. Then, my mom’s going to come after that. So, certainly with the grandma around, getting that good, nurturing feeling around the house is going to be … I think it’s just going to be instinct when we have the baby. We’ve had so many friends who have had babies lately, it’s been great. Digest: Have they been giving you advice?
Hyde: They all have different philosophies about breast feeding and what to buy as far as furniture and stuff like that.Digest: And Lindsay Korman (Theresa) is due at the same time.

Hyde: Whenever we see each other, we chat about what she’s going through. We’ve given her some people who we’ve seen, doctor-wise. Anything that I can do to help her, I’ll definitely do it.Digest: Do you bring the sonogram picture in to work?

Hyde: Oh, my God, yeah, You better believe it. What they do now is, you get it on VHS and a CD. I have three VHS tapes from three visits. So, we’re going to make this great presentation for the baby to have for the rest of his life.Digest: Are you going to tape the delivery?

Hyde: I don’t know. My wife and I haven’t really talked that much about it. My friend suggested to have someone else film it while you enjoy it because the moment of it actually happening is far greater than seeing it on tape, but you can relive it again and again on tape. I know her mom’s going to be here for the delivery. We’ll see. We’ll get plenty of pictures. It’s great. A baby changes everything — for the good!
