It’s Only My Opinion: GH Explodes and B&B Implodes But Y&R, DAYS and B&G Need To Call ‘Action’
Big reveals rocked General Hospital and The Bold and the Beautiful, but The Young and the Restless, Days of Our Lives, and Beyond the Gates have been treading water with key stories.
World War Z
GH shot the action out of a cannon last week, ending the long arc that began at the Five Poppies last summer while also tying up loose ends (like Britt never had Huntington’s).
Where to begin?! Cassius’s cover was blown, Sidwell was captured, Anna appeared to recover (until the late Peter appeared to her…), and Josslyn escaped from the bowels of Wyndemere via her own resourcefulness and Obrecht’s knowledge of electrical wires.
Not helpful? Carly breaking into Wyndemere to “save my daughter!” against the advice of everyone, including Charlotte and Danny.
Carly: “I need to handle this on my own.”
With no training or common sense. The Scooby kids argued that their dads, Jason and Valentin, wouldn’t want Carly breaking in alone, and then followed her after she ignored them. Compounding the problem was Carly’s decision to wear high heels that clickety-clacked on Wyndemere’s hard floors (did none of Valentin’s WSB training rub off on her when he was hiding out in her bed?), causing her to be immediately caught.
The scrappy teens created a diversion which drew Cullum and co. to the piers where a shootout left Cullum dead and Cassius and Josslyn bleeding out. All of a sudden the head of the WSB (John Oliver!) showed up.
Z (to Joss): “I’m here to help.”
The action shifted to the hospital where Z (“It’s my nom de guerre,” he explained) got a full debrief from Joss re: the prototype, Cullum being a double agent, etc. Joss agreed to make Cullum the hero and Cassius the villain in her official report which will look better for Z, but the clever girl demanded something big in return.
Joss: “I want all charges dropped against Valentin Cassadine and Jason Morgan.”
Z: “You are quite impressive, Agent Jacks. You have a long, bright future at the WSB.”
Mission accomplished? Not according to Carly. She confronted Z in Brennan’s office with a demand of her own.
Carly: “I want my daughter out of the WSB.”
Interspersed with that amazing action was the show’s trademark humor via Alexis and Ava, despite their dire circumstances. Alexis asked Sonny for help re: Danny going rogue and was shocked to learn Cullum killed Marco.
Alexis: “Thanks for the update. I’m going to go install a panic room and lock Danny in it for the rest of his life. I’ll give you the code.”
Ha! Over at Ava’s art gallery, Ethan took a bullet for Ava when Sidwell tried to kill her and then managed to banter through the pain.
Ava: “You cannot bleed out in my gallery. Can you imagine the paperwork? There will be police tape up for days. I cannot have that.”
For payoffs, balance and humor, GH hit every note last week. Bravo!
Face Off
B&B came in a close second with the Brooke/Katie brawl after Brooke learned Hope was Logan’s new designer. She launched into a truly narcissistic diatribe about Katie “stealing” her daughter, but Katie was having none of it.
Brooke: “You know how precious Hope is to me, working with her at Forrester, yet you go behind my back and take her from her family.”
Katie: “Hope has another family. She’s a Spencer now.”
Brooke: “She is my child and I am going to rescue her.”
Brooke then hurled something at the “Hope By Logan” big screen and smashed it, announcing she was going to take Hope “home” to Forrester — like Hope isn’t a grown woman on her eighth marriage with two kids. Hope wanted no part of her mother’s drama, telling Brooke she was staying at Logan where she feels valued and respected.
Hope: “You choose Ridge every time. If you weren’t going to choose me, I had to choose myself. My husband, my brother, my future is here.”
Brooke (nasty): “Go live with my sister and become a Spencer.”
She’s already a Spencer, but whatever. Katie and Hope made a bold move for themselves and their careers, as well as choosing to work with their husbands like Brooke has done with Ridge for decades.
Side note: For long-time fans, Brooke’s self-pity was rich.
Brooke: “Do you see the pain you are causing me? I never thought my own daughter would betray me like this. You shattered me to pieces!”
Not unlike when Brooke betrayed her daughter Bridget by sleeping with Bridget’s husband Deacon and getting pregnant — with Hope.
Beyond the Hate
The Bill/Dani/Hayley triangle on BTG isn’t rocking right now, but it has the potential to ignite Fairmont Crest. As the action picks up (after a week of reruns), we’re looking at Dani’s guilt over the elevator hook-up starting to eat at her and Hayley realizing Bill might not stick around long enough for her to fleece him. Let’s go, people!
A Titan-ic Payback
The Titan saga on DAYS has been going on too long, from the hostile takeover of DiMera in spring 2025 to Tony busting Philip for the forged letter. But last week’s twist that EJ is behind Titan’s secret investor ARO looks promising. There were Philip and Xander figuring out that the new owner’s terms were untenable when a lightbulb went off.
Philip: “It’s almost like this is personal.”
EJ (entering): “Damn right it is. ARO is ORA backwards.”
Philip: “Oh my God — One Rainy Afternoon.”
EJ: “And they say you’re the dumb one.”
The Kiriakis brothers stood there speechless as EJ confirmed he orchestrated Titan’s loan as payback for them setting up Johnny to publish Bonnie’s plagiarized novel.
EJ: “Did you really think I would let you get away with that?”
Philip: “This revenge cycle only weakens both sides. Let’s call a truce.”
Fat chance: If revenge is a dish best served cold, this one was ice. Their only hope is using Gabi’s inheritance from Stefan to pay back the loan, which would be deliciously ironic since that’s DiMera money. The downside? The nasty DiMera scion never pays for his crimes, so EJ’s retaliations are starting to ring hollow.
The Blind Side
How refreshing was it on Y&R when Nikki finally stood up for herself? She forbade the family from telling Victor she was losing her eyesight, which Victoria respected… sort of.
Nikki: “I am so angry and I cannot add Victor on top of that. His ego and his insistence he is the only one who knows? It diminishes me.”
Victoria: “It’s easier for you to be angry with Dad than it is for you to be vulnerable.”
Nikki: “Stop it! This is exactly what your father would do: Second-guess me.”
Nikki also handed her wedding rings back to Victor, which gave him the chance to stare sadly at them while she was in surgery. He reflected on how rotten he’d been to her via great flashbacks, to the point where he actually teared up. Will he offer Nikki the heartfelt apology she deserves? I’m all in for that.
Unlike the cockamamie tale of murderous psychopath Patty kidnapping first Jack and then Diane with the help of a smarmy “doctor” and no one calling the police. She blackmailed her way into the Abbott house and made such pathetic passes (“You will love me, Jack) it was honestly hard to watch. Her behavior is completely unhinged.
Diane (talking to Diane’s picture): “This is my home and Jack is my man. You are never going to touch Jack ever again.”
Kyle located Diane, Jack ordered Patty to get out (instead of, say, having her arrested or committed) and she came back and stabbed him.
Patty (as Jack collapsed): “I believe in love. I believe in light. We are going to be together forever.”
Scripting Jack with less vision than Nikki right now is willful blindness. Make it stop!
Hey. It’s only my opinion.
