Is General Hospital’s Jason Morgan Leaving the Mob Behind?
Is General Hospital’s Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) entering his post-mob era? That’s the distinct possibility that the show introduced in the Friday, July 31 episode, when Jason informed Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), “I can’t work for you anymore.”
Jason Wants to Leave the Mob
Since Jason Quartermaine transformed himself into Jason Morgan following his catastrophic brain injury in 1996, he has been inextricably linked to Sonny and the Corinthos organization — and while he has made various attempts to cut ties to the mob before, he has always wound up getting pulled back in.
In mid-July, Jason returned to Port Charles after spending several months in a WSB prison in Jakarta. While the full spectrum of what he underwent while incarcerated has yet to be revealed, the show has made it clear that the experience was more than unpleasant — and in the summer preview Head Writers Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten gave to Soap Opera Digest, they stated that his imprisonment “had a profound effect on his outlook, and how he intends to conduct the rest of his life.”
They further noted that Jason would make a decision with “big implications” for Sonny, which also suggests that Jason might not be easily talked into staying in his role as Sonny’s second in command.
On his podcast, That’s Awesome, Steve Burton hinted at GH taking Jason in a different direction, as well. In an episode that came out in the lead-up to Burton’s return from a months-long hiatus, the actor said that the show was “shifting directions [with] everything that has to kind of do with Jason and his world.”
On screen, Jason’s homecoming itself may well have foreshadowed a reset for the character. Jason — who viewers have criticized in the past for failing to put his children above his sense of duty to Sonny and Carly (Laura Wright) — immediately focused on his son Danny (Asher Antonyzyn). Danny was the first person he went to see, and he prioritized trying to mend their fractured relationship by taking the teen on a road trip. It wasn’t until they were back in Port Charles that Jason even informed Sonny and Carly, or his love interest, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud), that he was out of prison.
Even before Jason landed in Jakarta, it seemed like his multiple presumed deaths — coupled with the deaths of his ex-wife, Sam (Kelly Monaco), and his mother, Monica (Leslie Charleson) — had begun to transform his priorities. In 2025, he even moved into the Quartermaine mansion, a decision that would have been unthinkable to the angry young man who first accepted Sonny’s job offer nearly 30 years ago.
If Jason does leave the mob for real this time, it would signify the end of a long-running Port Charles era for both Jason and Sonny. But in classic Friday cliffhanger style, viewers will have to wait until Monday to learn about Jason’s intentions — and Sonny’s reaction to them.
