General Hospital’s Cameron Mathison ‘One Thousand Percent’ Feared Drew Would Be Killed Off (EXCL)

Comments
Much to the chagrin of many, many Port Charles citizens, Congressman Drew Cain has regained consciousness on General Hospital after being shot twice in the back by the unknown assailant who slipped into his home to bring an end to all the misery he has caused. “I could just hear the millions of viewers being like, ‘Noooooooo!’ ” teases Cameron Mathison, who plays the hated politician. “I could feel it as I fluttered my eyes open! I was like, ‘Yeah, here you go, everybody — I’m not gone yet!’ “

Life After (Near) Death

Mathison freely admits that at the rate Drew was going, making enemies left and right and giving the PCPD a remarkably long list of suspects with solid motive to want him dead, he definitely wondered if his days on the show were numbered. Asked if the thought that Drew might get killed off had crossed his mind, Mathison declares, “Absolutely! One thousand percent. I have so much gratitude for being on the show and there’s no negativity or anything like that, but as soon as [Drew’s descent into villainy] started happening, of course I was thinking about that. I’ve been around the block long enough to know when you can sort of smell somebody getting ready to be sacrificed for a better story, you know what I mean?”

He was, of course, relieved that this was not what the show had planned — and he thinks his alter ego’s status as a first-rate pot-stirrer is to thank for it. “Drew’s a good villain,” he grins. “I mean, he’s not out there killing people! I think there’s more story to tell, more things for him to get involved in, and, of course, I absolutely love being here, so it was great news for me!”
While the actor is grateful for Drew’s second chance, Drew himself does not use nearly dying as a springboard for redemption. “Within minutes of waking up, he’ was ready to exploit being the victim of this crime,” Mathison says. And because he wants his beloved Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) to have what her heart most desires — access to her children, Wiley and Amelia — that means pointing the finger at Michael (Rory Gibson). “He’s going to use this to target Michael regardless of whether Michael is the shooter. I think he partially believes that Michael shot him, but even if he didn’t, it’s flat-out an opportunity to bring down Michael so Willow gets her kids back.”
So, from Drew’s perspective, “It’s game on,” Mathison says. “A minute and a half after opening his eyes after being shot twice in the back at point-blank range, he’s ready to go! He’s ready to manipulate. He’s ready to bring an innocent man down. He doesn’t care! He’s not a good human, what can I say?”
