Fifteen years ago today, Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) proposed to Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco) on General Hospital, giving “JaSam” fans one of the couple’s most memorable moments. But getting to that rooftop proposal wasn’t easy — from a missing engagement ring to Sam seeking Alexis’s blessing, the road to Jason’s question was filled with unforgettable moments.

Maxie Tried to Help Jason Plan the Perfect Proposal

On the episode leading up to the proposal, Jason and Sam were enjoying the beautiful view of Port Charles from their penthouse balcony. Jason asked Sam to meet him for a romantic rooftop dinner, and while she realized he was planning something, she also quickly realized she wasn’t going to get him to spill any details.

Once he was alone again, Jason summoned Maxie (Kirsten Storms) to the penthouse and told her that he was planning a special evening for Sam and wanted her help with the details. Maxie could barely contain her excitement — that is, until she realized he hadn’t secured a ring. “You’re dead in the water!” she wailed.

Maxie quickly arranged for a jeweler to bring a selection of engagement rings to the penthouse. Jason selected a stunning ring from the private reserve, but a new crisis emerged when Maxie slipped the diamond onto her finger to show off its sparkle and accidentally sent it flying over the balcony and plunging 16 stories!

Sam Sought Alexis’s Blessing Before Saying Yes

Before meeting Jason for dinner, Sam went to see Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) because she suspected Jason was planning to propose and wanted her mother’s support. She revealed that she thought Jason was going to ask her to marry him and that she planned to say yes, but she wanted Alexis’s blessing.

While Alexis acknowledged that Jason’s dangerous lifestyle wasn’t ideal, she also recognized that Sam felt safe and loved in their relationship. Alexis ultimately gave Sam her approval, and the moment became an important step for Sam as she prepared to start a new chapter with Jason.

Jason Proposed With a Lug Nut Instead of a Diamond Ring

Maxie and Jason raced downstairs and made a desperate and ultimately failed attempt to locate the ring on the sidewalk and in the bushes below the balcony. He nixed her suggestion that he delay the proposal until he had a ring in hand.

Later, when Sam stepped onto the rooftop, Jason was waiting for her. She admired the romantic scene before her and he revealed that Maxie had helped him set it all up. Jason told Sam how much he appreciated having her in his life and reflected on how he had never understood the connection between what someone knew in their heart and a piece of jewelry — but had come to understand that people needed markers in life so they didn’t take things for granted.

Jason revealed that there were things he wished he had said to Jake — his son with Elizabeth (Rebecca Herbst), who was presumed dead at the time — but never had the chance to say, and he vowed that he would never take time or love for granted again. “I learned from what I lost,” he explained.

Holding Sam’s hands, Jason told her how much he loved her and how honored he would be if she agreed to spend the rest of her life with him. He asked Sam to marry him, and she assured him that she loved him.

Sam explained that the last time they had been engaged, she hadn’t known who she was, and their relationship ending had caused her to fall apart. This time, she said, things were different. Sam told Jason she no longer needed marriage to make her happy because she was secure in his love and that all she needed was him.

Jason assured her that she had him, but he still wanted to get married. “Yes, Jason,” she beamed. “I will marry you!”

Jason then revealed that there was one problem: Maxie had misplaced the engagement ring. He said that he’d found a last-minute substitute and produced a lug nut, which he slipped onto her finger. “I have everything that I want,” marveled Sam. “I can’t believe we’re getting married!”

“Believe it,” Jason replied. Sam and Jason kissed as they celebrated their bright future.
