General Hospital Exclusive: Willow’s Plan for Drew Is ‘Delusional,’ Katelyn MacMullen Says

General Hospital‘s Willow is in quite the bind. She’s been conspiring with Sidwell (Carlo Rota) to keep Drew (Cameron Mathison) in a locked-in state while she assumed her husband’s Congressional duties, but then her mom, Nina (Cynthia Watros), went and injected Brennan (Chris McKenna) with the same paralytic — and it’s not a good look that two perfectly healthy men appeared to have strokes under her roof. Plus, if she does stop dosing Drew, she’s facing both losing custody of her kids and going to jail. What’s a girl to do? Soap Opera Digest checked in with Katelyn MacMullen for a rundown on her character’s predicament.

Mission Impossible?

According to MacMullen, Willow is viewing her sticky situation as temporary. “At this point, Willow doesn’t want to keep drugging Brennan,” she says. “She doesn’t even want to drug Drew anymore. She’s thinking, ‘I’m just gonna keep this going until I can get all my ducks in a row,’ which to her means making sure that Drew can’t retaliate against her. She thinks that what happened with Brennan was just an unfortunate accident, and I don’t think she knows how she’s going to get that one back under control: ‘If he wakes up, he’ll tell everyone — and there goes the plan!’ But she feels that if she can at least make sure that Drew won’t retaliate, then she can figure out what to do about Brennan.”

On the May 28 episode, Sidwell responded to Willow’s suggestion that they bring Drew out of his locked-in state by proposing that they kill him, which Willow was not down with — even though she shot her spouse twice in the back not too long ago! “At that time, she was in such an emotional whirlwind and felt backed into a corner,” MacMullen muses. “She was operating from a place of trauma and wasn’t really herself. So when Sidwell talks about killing Drew, it freaks her out.

“Killing him was never part of the plan,” MacMullen insists. “He has a daughter [Scout, played by Cosette Abinante] that feels like a daughter to her. She doesn’t want his kid to lose her dad! And she doesn’t want to lose her own kids, either. She doesn’t want her life to be ruined! It’s such a horrible corner for her to be backed into. It is of her own making, obviously — it’s just not great for her [laughs]!”

All in all, Willow may be regretting her decision to throw in with Sidwell. “Essentially,” notes MacMullen, “they were just going to keep Drew at bay until Willow got her kids back and Sidwell got his political ducks in a row,” which he accomplished by blackmailing Laura into appointing Willow to complete Drew’s term in Congress. “But Sidwell’s really powerful, and he feels like a threat to her. She’s realizing that she can’t count on him to get her out of this. It’s all on Willow to get herself out of this situation once and for all.”

Which seems like a pretty tall order — and the actress says that Willow is approaching the situation with blind optimism. “I think she genuinely thinks this is all going to work out,” MacMullen chuckles. “I do think some fear is probably there, but she doesn’t entertain it for very long. She’s like, ‘I just gotta keep this ball moving! I’ll get things settled, everything will be fine, all will be right in the world and no one will ever have to know. I’ll be able to carry on with my life.’ It’s obviously coming from a delusional place,” she acknowledges, “but it’s born out of, ‘I’ve survived this far. I just have to keep surviving.'”
