General Hospital Comings & Goings: Maxwell Caulfield Cast in Alexis & Ava Story
General Hospita viewers may recognize a familiar face when Maxwell Caulfield makes an appearance on in the Friday, May 29, episode. The actor, who started his career with a small role on Ryan’s Hope in 1980 before hitting it big playing Miles Colby in the prime-time soaps Dynasty and The Colbys and in movies like Grease 2 and Empire Records, shared his excitement at returning to daytime and previewed his shady character in a new interview with TV Insider.
The Art of the Deal
Caulfield will be playing Apollo, a gallery owner in New York City who interacts with Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn) and Ava (Maura West) as they search for information about Delilah Wilson, the late mother of the baby that Chase (Josh Swickard) and Brook Lynn (Amanda Setton) are hoping to adopt. “There’s something a little dubious about him,” Caulfield said of his character. “It was nice having that little undercurrent to play whilst not quite knowing what it was about.”
Although this particular role is just for one episode, Caulfield was thrilled to finally appear on the long-running ABC soap. “Mark Teschner, the brilliant casting director over there, has been working for a while to get a role for me on the show,” he explained. “In this instance, it’s just a one-off, but I was happy to take it — even though taping the episode meant being unable to travel to the UK with his wife, Juliet Mills (the infamous Tabitha Lenox on Passions), to attend a birthday celebration for her sister, actress Hayley Mills (The Parent Trap). Quipped the actor, “If you want to get a job, book yourself a holiday and the phone will ring telling you to call it off.”

The last time Caulfield worked in daytime was when he played Pierce Riley on All My Children from 1996-97, so he was grateful to his two Daytime Emmy-winning co-stars for helping him transition into the hectic world of a soap, raving, “They’re a great double act, those two. Maura’s got a great sense of humor, and Nancy was particularly reassuring and very sweet-natured. They put me completely at ease; I found working with them a delight.” He was also pleased to encounter some familiar faces on set he knew from his wife’s former soap, including Brook Kerr (Portia), who played Whitney on Passions.
But this is not the first time Caulfield has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with a GH legend: On The Colbys, his character was married to Fallon, played by none other than Emma Samms, fresh from her first stint in Port Charles playing Holly Sutton.
