General Hospital Comings & Goings: Kathleen Gati Returns as Liesl Obrecht (Excl)
On General Hospital in early March, Obrecht headed out of Port Charles to attend a medical conference in New Zealand — but Kathleen Gati makes her triumphant return as the crafty physician on Friday, April 24 — and you can expect drama to follow!
Coming Around Again
In the storyline, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) orchestrated Obrecht’s departure to get her mom off Nathan’s (Ryan Paevey) case about dating Lulu (Alexa Havins) instead of reuniting with Maxie (Kirsten Storms). Off screen, Gati was also doing some international travel for work. The actress tells Soap Opera Digest, “I recently spent several months in Spain filming a Netflix series. While it was a wonderful project and great fun, I was really excited to get back to General Hospital!”
Gati, who originated the role of Obrecht back in 2012, declares, “Of all the characters I have played throughout my career, Liesl Obrecht is by far my favorite, and I miss her when I am away too long. So it’s great to be back! Needless to say, I can’t wait to see what the writers have in store for her!”
While Obrecht was away, viewers learned that her miraculously returned-from-the-dead son, Nathan, was actually Nathan’s twin, Cassius, who had taken over his brother’s life — and that Britt has known this all along. Presumably, though, Obrecht is still in the dark about this, and she is likely poised for major heartbreak if she learns that the real Nathan truly is dead and that Cassius has been deceiving her.
Her return to Port Charles also comes at a precarious time for Britt. Cassius’s bosses, Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), are strong-arming her into finishing off the dangerous cold fusion project launched by her late father, Cesar Faison (Anders Hove), and her efforts to get out from under their thumbs resulted in disaster when Cullum tried to kill both Britt and Jason (Steve Burton) and young Rocco (Finn Carr) stopped him by shooting him in the back. Jason took the rap and was whisked away by the WSB, but Britt is terrified about what Cullum might do to Rocco if he finds out who really pulled the trigger.
Keep Your Enemies Closer
Opposite this, Obrecht’s enemy-turned-frenemy, Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), is also suffering at the hands of Sidwell and Cullum’s trickery. While being held hostage at Wyndemere, she was drugged into a state of paranoid psychosis, believing that Faison was still alive and had visited her. Her hallucinations also featured Peter (Wes Ramsey), Faison’s only child not sired by Obrecht, as well as Obrecht herself, who she believed had administered a phlebotomy treatment to her in the dingy room where she’d been stashed. Anna has wound up institutionalized in France, and her prognosis has been grim.
Indeed, that is the topic at hand during Gati’s first scenes when Obrecht returns from New Zealand: She will meet with Felicia (Kristina Wagner), Anna’s loyal and deeply concerned friend, who delivers some news about Anna and makes a surprising proposition.
