The Doctor Is In!
Be afraid, citizens of AMC, be very afraid! Vincent Irizarry‘s David Hayward is just a few months away from returning to wreak the kind of havoc that only he can. To help you prep for his comeback, here’s a refresher course in the relationships between Dr. H. and the women (and men) of Pine Valley.
Babe Carey: Although he didn’t know it until she was an adult, Babe is David’s daughter (and the mother of his grandson, Little Adam), the product of a one-night stand with Krystal back in his med school days at Stanford.
Adam Chandler: He is one of Jake’s longest-running Pine Valley enemies. David found out about Colby’s true parentage (that she is Adam’s biokid, not Jake’s) and blackmailed Adam with the info, the first in a long line of back-and-forth crimes between the men. Other highlights (lowlights?) include David shipping Adam to Malaysia in a crate (really) and David revealing to Dixie that the daughter Krystal was carrying, which Adam believed he had sired, was actually the result of a Tad/Krystal liaison.
Colby Chandler: David helped deliver Liza’s progeny.
JR Chandler: JR and David had problems stemming from David’s involvement with JR’s mom, Dixie. Later, JR married David’s daughter, Babe. During the baby-swapping brouhaha, things got really ugly. JR hated David for helping Babe keep Little Adam away from him; David hated JR for trying to kill Babe.
Palmer Cortlandt: To reward David for helping save Dixie’s life, Palmer used his sway with the hospital board to get David’s job back after he’d been terminated for gross misconduct (see Jake Martin). David saved Palmer’s life in the wake of the 2006 Mardi Gras explosion and held it over Palmer’s head.
Erica Kane: La Kane was David’s first significant Pine Valley love interest. David was driving the car and Erica was his passenger when it crashed; he saved her life, but she was badly scarred. David helped her get the surgery that restored her looks and they fell in love, even getting engaged, but the romance waned. They remained on relatively good terms until David helped Babe keep Miranda (Erica’s granddaughter via Bianca) away from Binks.
Greenlee Smythe: Greenlee was married to David’s beloved half brother, Leo, who died in 2002.
Ryan Lavery: Don’t expect him to do cartwheels over David’s return, either. Ryan has plenty of reasons to despise David, not the least of which is that he slept with Gillian in exchange for the bail money she sought for Ryan (who at the time stood accused of raping Kit). David then cruelly told Ryan about the liaison. Years later, David tried to convince Tad and Dixie that Ryan and Annie’s little girl, Emma, was their own missing daughter, Kate.
Jake Martin: There is no love lost between David and Jake. Jake was involved with David’s ex-lover, Allie, and David threatened to ruin her career if she didn’t dump Jake for him. He also tried to frame Jake for the attempted murder of Adam.
Joe Martin: David incurred the wrath of sometime-boss Joe by setting up Jake for attempted murder and tampering in numerous ways with Tad’s happiness. David, in turn, blamed Joe for the demise of Leora, his baby daughter with Anna.
Krystal Carey Martin: After the brief sexual relationship that produced Babe, Krystal and David lost contact for many years. Krystal revealed that David is Babe’s dad to stop David from taking “Bess” (really Miranda) away from Babe and returning her to Bianca. It worked. David was attracted to Krystal, but she didn’t return the sentiment. David helped blow up Krystal’s life by telling Dix that Krystal’s pregnancy was the result of her unfaithfulness to Adam with Tad.
Tad Martin: Where to begin? David’s obsessive love for Dixie is at the root of the great enmity between these men. David was ruthless in his efforts to win Dixie away from Tad (and she did log some time in his bed), but when she uncovered the (illegal) lengths to which David had gone, she dumped him and reconciled with Tad. Later, when a pregnant Dixie’s health problems threatened her life, he helped her flee to Switzerland for treatment against Tad’s wishes. When Dix was presumed dead, David twisted the knife by getting Dixie’s half sister, Di, to pretend to be her, a ruse that worked for a time.
Aidan Devane: Now that Aidan is wed to Greenlee, David and Aidan are kinda-sorta related. But Aidan hates David for what he did to Aidan’s one-time love Maria — using an unproven drug on her that wiped out her memory in the wake of her near-fatal plane crash, and convincing an amnesiac Maria that she was a murderess.
