Days of Our Lives’ Rachel Boyd Dishes Sophia’s Return from the Dead
Reports of Sophia Choi’s death on Days of our Lives were greatly exaggerated, and Rachel Boyd returns to the role on the Peacock soap on Friday, October 9. And to hear the actress tell it, Sophia isn’t just back — she’s back with a vengeance!
Rachel Boyd Previews Sophia’s Return to DAYS
Sophia was presumed dead five months ago at the hands of Kristen DiMera (Stacy Haiduk), who bashed her with a rock and pushed her into the Salem River. At the time, Boyd didn’t know what the future held for the character, but she had an inkling that DAYS had more in store for her. “I remember hearing that nobody really dies in Salem,” she winked to TV Insider.
Boyd’s comeback began with a call from Noel Maxam, DAYS’ co-executive producer, who laid out the upcoming storyline for Sophia. “When he told me what they had planned for Sophia’s return, I was so thrilled and said yes immediately,” the actress told the outlet.
She also acknowledged that not every DAYS fan will welcome the sight of an alive-and-well Sophia. “I think Sophia has been a polarizing character for viewers,” she said, adding that fan sentiment online during her first stint could be so harsh, “I had to stop looking at that stuff just to focus on how I wanted to portray Sophia.”
Staying focused on her work was even more important when she stepped back onto the DAYS set, as Sophia’s story quickly kicks into high gear.
When fans first see Sophia, she’s at a diner in Paducah, Kentucky, waiting tables under an assumed name, Amelia, when she is spotted by none other than Kristen. Boyd shared, “I wanted her to come back stronger than ever,” having survived a brush with death and concealing her identity for six months. The actress described Sophia 2.0 as “much more independent and a fighter.”
And unlike her last stint, during which Sophia was laser-focused on Holly Jonas (Ashley Puzemis) and Tate Black (Leo Howard), Boyd revealed that the “new” Sophia “isn’t going to be primarily driven by revenge on Holly or getting Tate to love her.”
As for what will occupy Sophia’s time, the actress wasn’t at liberty to say — but she did make one promise: “as long as Sophia’s alive, chaos will follow!”
