Days Of Our Lives Exclusive: How Casey Moss Prepared For JJ’s Intense Monologue

Cat’s release from jail led to a powerful and unforgettable scene for actor Casey Moss (JJ): the moment his character vehemently confronts the woman who was pretending to be his late sister Abigail on Days of our Lives.
A Powerful Confrontation
“I did that for about five pages straight,” recalls Moss. “I had a moment where I lay into her for half an episode, basically telling her how evil she is and how sick she is to do something like that and take advantage of a family at that particular time, because they’re raw and vulnerable and kind of confused. But they let her [in]. When it comes to heart with the Hortons, that’s what really leads the way ,in my opinion. So when you stab that and poke at it, that’s a really big issue. That’s a big problem.”
Because of the magnitude of the scenes, Moss took some extra time to prepare for them and make sure he had his dialogue committed to memory. “I just didn’t want to go up on a line,” he admits with a laugh. “But it went great and really smoothly.”
According to the actor, the process of memorizing and delivering a four-page monologue is — at least for him — somewhat different than working on a script with a more typical back-and-forth flow of dialogue between characters. “It takes a little bit more time,” he explains. “So I just had to sit with it for quite some time. It’s not like you would do [if you were working] on a movie, because you’ve got a lot more time there. But this, I probably worked on for a little over a week, just going over it and over again in my head.”
What made things easier was the quality of the material. “I loved the writing,” praises Moss. “It all made sense. Sometimes things don’t click in your head as fast as you want them to, or maybe as fast as other scenes. But this one, to me, made a lot of sense. And then we shot it pretty quickly. I believe we got through that set [of scenes] in 30, 40 minutes. I was surprised at how smoothly it came [to me], because it’s been some time since I was on that set delivering a bunch of dialogue. But it came pretty quickly.”
Moss notes that the “Abigail” confrontation was the biggest scene he had during this story arc. “It was the one with the most meat,” he reflects. “But there’s quite a bit coming later on that I also got to sink my teeth into, too. It’s just that this one happened pretty quickly. I think I was back for maybe a week and a half, two weeks, and then we had this big story explosion.”
