Will reassured a nervous, suspicious Gwen that “Paul’s gonna come through for us. He’s not gonna let me down. Not this time.” Oh, the poor Best Teen Ever is gonna be so devastated! Speaking of looming disappointments, Paul listened quietly as Emily reached past the Footprints Of Proof and handed Hal divorce papers, declaring their marriage really and more sincerely dead. It’s interesting that Paul didn’t create a distraction to stop her from potentially ruining everything — that’s either complete trust or a nagging sense of self-destructiveness. When he finally made his presence known, Emily tried to keep things from escalating by telling Hal to leave. “You’re on your own now,” Hal told her, trying to impress upon her the weight of her decision. When he was gone, Paul started to gloat but when he noticed how shaken Emily was, he changed his tone to one of praise for how she’d handled the situation. Smooth! Paul’s getting so good at the psychological manipulation that he needs to teach a course. “I am with you 100 percent,” she finally said, which is her way of asking for sex. After the commercial, we found ourselves zooming down from overhead on them, naked (but for a strategically-placed blanket) and plotting on their coital couch as Paul detailed his plan to keep the trust fund out of Will’s hands. Oh, poor Best Teen Ever! …. And Will was already pretty bummed. He met with Hal at Java to discuss unfreezing his trust fund, but his Dad warned him not to trust Paul: “Unless theres something in it for him, he’s not gonna give you a damn thing.” Way to badmouth your son’s brother, Hal. (Even if it’s true.) He then cautioned him about getting so deeply involved with Gwen, but Will defended his friend (Best. Teen. Ever.) and even brought up that it was his idea to claim to be the father of her baby originally, to save the Luckiest Little Montegan’s feelings.
Carly called Barbara (!) for “advice” regarding ammunition against Gwen. Babs typically snobby suggestion was to check out the health code violations in “that room that she calls home…. And when I offered to help her out, she was ungrateful and disrespectful,” sniffed Barbara, which for her basically justifies anything that Carly wanted to do to Gwen. Carly headed straight to the room behind Burt’s Garage, which we must say has deteriorated substantially since Katie fixed it up for Simon. “What a dump,” Carly declared as she took photos (No doubt forgetting that the Yardley Motel, her home in Oakdale when she first arrived, was condemned. Ah, the parallels.) Of course, Gwen interrupted her, and was pushed down trying to snatch the camera away. Carly ran off, but Gwen followed her and practically pounded down the door at the Milltown house. She tearfully demanded the camera, but Carly just pushed her backwards, causing Gwen to knock over the baby carriage on the porch. Cue the Frankenstein flashback! Once Gwen left, Carly had another flash and said to herself, “That’s it. I know how to make sure Gwen never gets her hands on that baby.” Gwen went home and took her frustrations out on Will. Oh, poor … well, you know the drill.
Meanwhile, Emily and Paul had just put their clothes back on when Susan came back. She wanted to talk to her daughter in private, but Emily refused to let Paul leave and kicked her mom out (but not before he acted indignant when she expressed fears about her daughter being with him.) Alone again, Paul and Emily went out on his tiny balcony and burned the Footprints Of Proof with their umpteen-thousandth celebratory champagne toast/symbolic burning ritual.
Dusty stopped by Barbara’s to discuss Jennifer’s hyper behavior and blamed the antidepressants, Tom Cruise-style. “I think the pills are nonsense,” he declared with a bit of a Fonzie vibe. Jennifer interrupted their talk and took Dusty outside to convince him that her mood swings were just an attempt to balance out (he was still skeptical, but wants to help). When she came back into the suite, Barbara was counting her happy pills with a worried look on her face. “These pills are supposed to help you, but they could also become a crutch,” fretted Barbara, but Jen went all manic to convince her that she’s fine and it’s Dusty who’s delusional. “He hasn’t suffered like you and I have suffered,” she said, working Babs like a pro.
At Java, Dusty ran into Meg. “Let’s not even talk about it,” he said after bringing up her Chicago seduction attempt himself. They had a tense chat, which ended in him telling her to stay away from Jennifer. Which is ironically exactly what Jen told him to do when she found him later. Dusty went back to Barbara’s to say “I think she’s falling — fast,” while Meg bought Jennifer a cup of coffee at Java. When Meg passive-aggressively hinted that Jen and Dusty might be more than business partners, Jen manically denied that, adding that she’s so over Dusty.
Sierra and Lily (with a squirrelly Keith standing by) confronted Lucinda about La Clinica, but she was steadfast in her decision to continue her treatment there. Their solution was to confiscate her passport and driver’s license and grounding the plane so she couldn’t leave the country. “This is outrageous and utterly ridiculous and rather naive,” she hissed, before launching into a glorious freakout about how they couldn’t stop her and kicking her daughters out. Once they were gone, she realized that it might be more difficult than she let on and made a phone call: “It’s Mrs. Walsh. Your presence is needed. Immediately.” Ooh, scary! Actually, she was summoning Keith to demand a lift south of the border (although we just realized that our phrasing is icky). He tried to decline her request, but she pointed out that she’s not asking.
