“I feel like Quasimoto, Katie,” Henry alliterated about his bad back debilitation. Mike arrived (carefully holding the door open before Maddie could slam it closed), having been summoned simply to move Henry onto the couch. Mike insisted on calling Dr. Bob, who made a house call (!) and diagnosed some bruising, wrote a prescription and ordered him to stay on bed rest. Katie quickly turned her living room into a rehabilitation center. Afterward, Maddie was happy to usher Mike out, but Henry wanted a moment alone with his former best friend, so he sent his sister off for the prescription and apologized for her stubborn rudeness. Maddie eavesdropped and fantasized herself a much better scenario, in which her brother slapped Mike around a bit before swatting him away and sweeping sophisti-Katie into a super-romantic smooch. Back in reality, Katie walked Mike to the door and thanked him. “You know I’d do anything for Henry,” he grinned, somewhat inappropriately, considering that very recently he was passionately rekindling an affair with the man’s barely ex-wife. Maddie tried to curb their lustful moment, but Katie quickly shooed her inside. “She is a piece of work,” Mike said. “Well she has met her match in me,” Katie huffed. “Someone should warn her,” he chuckled, before tearing himself away from her to go home. Maddie spied on them through the door, as Henry ordered her again to stop playing matchmaker.
Lily came home calling for Luke, but he was off getting high (in a plane!) with Keith. She was leaving Holden a panicked message when she finally found their note, which didn’t explain much, so she left Keith an annoyed message. “We can go anywhere; I’ve got a full tank of gas,” said Keith (and apparently an unrestricted flight plan). They had a bit of a heart-to-heart as Keith explained that being up in the air helps give one perspective on the now-small problems below. He even let Luke fly the plane and eventually they reached a comfortable truce. Later, they stopped by Al’s, where Luke made an “all my friends are doing it” excuse for his drinking. Keith made him a deal: if he agrees to “stay away from those knuckleheads” and be a good kid, he’ll give him flying lessons. They shook on it as Lily walked in to scold them both. Luke stood up for Keith and vice versa, then made her more upset when they told her about their flight, so she grounded them both for two weeks. Just kidding — “over my dead body” was her response to the idea of Luke getting lessons.
Paul couldn’t resist the temptation to open Rosanna’s Box again and sift through some of the items, including her diamond ring — as the baby footprint sat conspicuously unnoticed inside. He was interrupted by the arrival of a sobbing Jen, seeking comfort for her despair. He enfolded her in a sweet, brotherly hug, a shoulder to cry on and a sympathetic ear. It was all going well until Craig’s name came up. “Maybe losing this baby is a blessing in disguise … Maybe you’re better off he’s dead,” Paul reasoned. Ouch. Jen was horrified, but Paul argued that things happen for a reason and she realized he was in just as much pain. “I want to be sensitive to every agony of every minute of every day. That’s what keeps me motivated.” She noted that he’s still desperately in love with Ro (hence the tiny hope chest) — and he admitted that he feels like a lost cause. Then she picked up the footprint. He assumed it was Cabot’s; Jen deduced that it was more likely the adopted baby’s. Paul then did a 180, saying that life is too short and they should all move on. Some red flags about his rapid attitude adjustment went up for Jennifer, but he talked her out of them. “You’ve given me a lot of hope tonight, Jen,” he smiled and they agreed that they’re going to get through this. But after she left, he couldn’t help but open Rosanna’s Box again to examine the footprint and remember Ro’s last words.
Carly was up with Rosanna’s still-nameless baby; she called him “Pal,” apologized for being so scared of holding him at first, and promised to take the best care possible of him. The nurse arrived with the bottle just as he started getting fussy, and Gwen showed up at the door, asking to see her son. “I never really got the chance to say good-bye,” reasoned Gwen, as she made her impressively calm request. Carly, not surprisingly, didn’t take it so well, so Gwen got more worked up, and Carly finally ordered her to leave, but promised to consult with Jack in the morning. Gwen ordered her to make the call now, so Carly left the room, as the nurse walked back in with the baby and recognized her. Gwen lied that Carly told her it would be okay, so the nurse handed her the baby. First, Gwen rubbed her hands with some antiseptic (and then wiped them on her skirt, thus making that action pointless), then took her son in her arms. The nurse ran upstairs to grab a pacifier, and Carly came back in and flipped out, assuming Gwen was trying to steal the child. “You are a mean, hateful woman. You don’t deserve to raise my kid,” Gwen concluded. Carly went on the offensive, threatening to call the cops and basically scaring Gwen into making a tearful declaration: “I want my son back.”
