Anna Devane Wed Duke Lavery on General Hospital and Other Big Soap Moments from October 16

In 1984, Erica Kane (Susan Lucci) eloped with Mike Roy (Hugo Napier) on All My Children. The marriage proved invalid because as it turned out, the man Erica had married earlier in the year, Adam Chandler, was not actually dead — he had faked his demise to test her loyalty, as he suspected that she was still in love with Mike.

In 1987, Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan) and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes) wed on General Hospital. The wedding took place in a church, with Duke wearing a traditional Scottish kilt and Anna wore a gorgeous gown constructed of satin and lace, along with a brooch (one that in real life was a family heirloom belonging to Ian Buchanan). Bagpipers and a Scottish officiant completed the nods to Duke's heritage. Anna was escorted down the aisle by her first husband, Robert, while the wedding party included Sean Donely, Tiffany Hill, Tony Jones and Felicia Jones. While saying his vows, Duke got choked up, telling Anna, "I love Robin [her daughter] as sincerely as I love you,” and declared them “my very special family.” “I pledge you my eternal love,” she replied, caressing his cheek as he slipped the ring on her finger.

In 1992, Isabella Toscano Black (Staci Greason) died from pancreatic cancer on Days of Our Lives, leaving behind widower John Black (Drake Hogestyn) and their young son, Brady. Her disease had progressed quickly, and she died in John's arms in Italy. The character had been introduced to the Salem scene in 1989.

In 1995, Thorsten Kaye made his daytime debut as Patrick Thornhart on One Life To Live. Kaye left the series in 1997 alongside Susan Haskell, who played Patrick's love interest, Marty Saybrooke; the duo married in real life and became parents to two daughters, Marlowe and McKenna. Kaye's next daytime gig was as Ian Thornhart on Port Charles, where he appeared from 2000-03. Next, he joined the cast of All My Children as Zach Slater, a role he played from 2004-10 and reprised in 2011. In 2013, he took on his current role, Ridge Forrester on Bold and Beautiful, for which he has won two Daytime Emmys as Outstanding Lead Actor.

In 2024 on General Hospital, it was revealed to the audience that Holly Sutton (Emma Samms, l.) was the mother of Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) when Holly stopped by the Quartermaine mansion and was greeted by Sasha with these words: "What are you doing here, Mother?!" Discussing the surprise twist with Soap Opera Digest, Samms noted, "I knew it was a good story when we were rehearsing in the makeup room to start with and there was a squeal from the makeup department. That was a good sign! And then another good sign was that when we did the rehearsal upstairs in front of the cameras, even the camera people — who are the most seasoned, and basically disinterested, understandably, after all these years — gasped. There was an audible gasp. And I said to myself, ‘This is good! This is getting a reaction!’ And that’s the best you can hope for.” Samms also said she understood that the reveal was likely to be controversial with fans. “It’s going to please some people, it’s going to upset some people,” she notes. “But it’s going to surprise everyone! And that’s what you want from a daytime drama. It’s as good as it gets, I think, in terms of plot twists, that anybody could have hoped for, really. Certainly me!”
