John meant a lot to his grandkids, Rachel (Alice Halsey, l.) and Tate (Leo Howard), as well as his great granddaughter, Ari (Marissa Reyes), who recently returned to Salem. It seems as if it were just yesterday when Ari was Rachel's age.

If anyone is as brokenhearted as Marlena, it would be John's best friend of many years, Steve (Stephen Nichols). The two were ISA agents together, co-owned Black Patch detective agency and have rescued each other from countless jams over their friendship that has spanned almost 40 years.

Since Kimberly couldn't make the trip because of her fighting cancer, husband Shane is representing her with the Brady siblings — Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) and Roman (Josh Taylor). John was once believed to be family and he remained close to the Bradys after it was revealed he wasn’t the real Roman.
