What’s Wrong with Nikki on The Young & the Restless? Her Devastating Diagnosis Revealed
Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) was diagnosed with a mass pressing on her optic nerve on The Young and the Restless in the June 22 episode after weeks of worsening headaches and vision problems.
Nikki Newman Diagnosed With Optic Nerve Mass
When Nikki’s headaches began in May, she initially dismissed the symptoms as stress-related, tied to ongoing tension with husband Victor (Eric Braeden) and concern over their son Nick’s (Joshua Morrow) drug dependency. By mid-June, the symptoms had worsened and Nikki began losing her vision, so Victoria (Amelia Heinle) finally convinced her mother to see a doctor.
After Nikki underwent diagnostic tests, Dr. Nowling (Doug Tompos) informed her and Victoria that the results showed a mass pressing on her optic nerve. He cautioned that if left untreated, the condition could cause her to go blind. As they reviewed her MRI scans, he noted that because of the mass’s location, surgery would be difficult and she would still be at risk of blindness. Dr. Nowling promised Nikki that he would do everything he could to help her.
The doctor stepped out of the room to give Nikki and Victoria the chance to begin processing the news. “This cannot be happening,” Nikki lamented, admitting that she had not seriously considered such a dire diagnosis. Victoria told her that she would have Nate review her MRI results for a second opinion, but when she prodded Nikki to call Victor with the news, Nikki was adamant that Victor not be informed.
In an interview with TV Insider, Melody Thomas Scott explained what was driving her character’s decision to conceal her condition from her husband. “Nikki is hesitant to share the news with Victor because she doesn’t want him reconciling with her out of guilt or obligation,” the actress said. “Nikki has been down that road with Victor in the past —looking at you, Ashley [Abbott, Eileen Davidson]! We’d like to think that Nikki has grown up since then and is making better choices. At a time when Nikki needs Victor’s support the most, she may end up pushing him away.”
As the story unfolds, Scott noted, Nikki will have to act fast. “Time is not on her side,” she said, “and she is forced to make some major decisions.”
Scott teased that her Y&R alter ego will be “challenged like never before” as she faces this crisis and urged viewers to buckle up for the twists and turns ahead. “Nikki is in for quite a ride this summer,” she declared, “and I hope the audience enjoys taking this journey with her.”
