The Young and the Restless: Patty’s Shocking Return Turns Jack’s World Upside Down

Comments

Jack (Peter Bergman) was shaken when he regained consciousness to find himself being held captive on a yacht on Young and Restless. But the already volatile situation took an even more dangerous turn when his unstable ex-wife, Patty (Stacy Haiduk), entered his room. In the March 9 episode, the two had their first conversation in over a decade as he tried to figure out why she had returned and what she was after.

Help Me Help You

Jack backed away from the doorway slowly as he took in the startling sight of Patty standing before him. She admitted their reunion was “surreal,” but assured him, “I come in peace.” Naturally skeptical, Jack chose his words carefully so as not to set her off, and she gently explained he couldn’t make a run for it because they were alone on a boat in the middle of a lake. When he inquired how she got out of the maximum-security psychiatric facility, Patty claimed she had been released. “I’m a changed woman,” she declared, “and I’m here to make amends.”

Jack had a lot of questions and demanded to know how and why he was abducted and what she wanted from him. Patty informed him that it took a lot of years of hard work, but the right combination of medication and therapy had changed everything. “I’m rehabilitated, Jack,” she smiled. Noting that he was being held against his will, Jack questioned how successful that rehabilitation actually was. Patty asked if he believed in redemption and argued that since he’d remarried Diane, he clearly believed in forgiveness. When she hoped he could send some of that forgiveness her way, Jack angrily retorted that, given her history, that was a “big ask.” But she insisted she was here to help him heal.

Jack found the idea of her helping him to heal laughable and demanded to know what she was after. “Freedom,” she said. “A release. For both of us.” After claiming that she had just wanted to check in on him to see if he was awake and comfortable, Patty smiled that he was looking good and excused herself, promising to return.

A Matter of Trust

Alone again, Jack paced around the small room and looked out the porthole before sitting down to wonder aloud why Patty had come back after all these years, and what her agenda could possibly be. “I know what you’ve done,” he grumbled to himself. “I know what you’re capable of. Whatever this is, it cannot be good.”

Later, Patty returned with a cart laden down with a tray of food and a selection of beverages, but he was obviously wary of taking anything from her. Teasing that she didn’t want him to go hungry, Patty offered to be his taster to prove that nothing was poisoned. She took a sip of a single malt and offered it to him, suggesting it would help soothe his nerves. When Jack was still wary, she sipped the other one, but then gave up and put down the drinks to offer him some food, taking a bite and declaring it delicious. Again declining, Jack simply wanted to know what she wanted. Patty explained that the work she had done on herself was extreme, but now she’s faced that what she had done to him and his family was “inhuman” and realized that she could rebuild herself and be a human being again.

Jack admitted he’s needed redemption himself over the years and accepted a drink. “I’ve probably had more than my share of second chances,” he added. Patty was pleased at the idea that he could find a way to forgive her, but he insisted it would take more than words. Jack wanted her to prove it by getting him out of this room and taking him to shore, where they could go their separate ways, and she could return to being this “new human being” she was creating. Patty moved in close and admitted that, as charming as he still is, that wasn’t an option. When Jack asked why not, she grinned and revealed, “Because I’m not the one in charge here.”
