The Young and the Restless Alum Tom Ligon, Who Played Lucas Prentiss, Dies at 85

Comments

Veteran soap opera actor Tom Ligon, best known for playing Lucas Prentiss on The Young and the Restless, has died at the age of 85. The longtime daytime television actor also appeared on Santa Barbara, All My Children, Loving and Another World across a career spanning decades in soaps, film, and prime-time television.

Ligon’s death was confirmed by SAG-AFTRA in a Facebook post post honoring the veteran actor and his 60-year membership in the union.

A Veteran Soap Actor and Y&R Favorite

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Ligon began his daytime career on the ABC soap A World Apart, where he played T.D. Drikard from 1970–71. He later landed his signature role in daytime television as Lucas Prentiss on The Young and the Restless, which he played from 1978–1982.

On Y&R, Ligon’s Lucas Prentiss was central to a blockbuster romantic quadrangle involving his brother, Lance Prentiss (John McCook and Dennis Cole), Leslie Brooks (Victoria Mallory), and Lorie Brooks (Jaime Lyn Bauer), making him a key figure in the show’s early storyline history.

In his Soap Opera Encyclopedia, historian Christopher Schemering noted that when sisters Leslie and Lorie fell for Lucas’s brother, Lance, “Thus began the show’s most memorable romances, a relationship as complex as it was alliterative: Leslie loved Lance but but Lance married her lusty sister Lorie. Lance’s brother Lucas married Leslie when Leslie became pregnant with Lance’s child. But Lucas, married to Leslie, loved Lorie.”

Other Soap Opera Roles

Beyond The Young and the Restless, Ligon built a steady daytime résumé across multiple series. He played Billy Bristow on Loving, William Addison on Santa Barbara, Dr. Snow on All My Children, and Ted Briar on Another World.

His work made him a recognizable presence across ABC, NBC, and CBS daytime television throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

Film and Prime-time Career

Outside soaps, Ligon appeared in films including Paint Your Wagon (1969) and Bang the Drum Slowly (1973). His prime-time television credits included guest roles on Starsky & Hutch, Charlie’s Angels, Dallas, and Law & Order.

He also appeared in HBO’s Oz, portraying Alvin Yood, a recurring role he played across Seasons 4 through 6.

Stage Work and SAG-AFTRA Service

On stage, Ligon performed in the Off-Broadway production God Says There Is No Peter Ott opposite Rue McClanahan (ex-Caroline, AW), and on Broadway in Angela with Geraldine Page and Love Is a Time of Day with Sandy Duncan.

A longtime member of SAG-AFTRA for six decades, Ligon served on the New York Local Board and held leadership roles including National Seniors Committee Chair and NY Seniors Committee Co-Chair.

Personal Life

Ligon was married to Katharine Dunfee Clarke from their New Year’s Eve wedding in 1976 until her death in 2009.

Soap Opera Digest sends condolences to Ligon’s family, friends and fans.
