Shemar Moore Set To Star In New S.W.A.T. Spinoff!
Just days after the series finale of S.W.A.T. aired on CBS, Sony Pictures Television announced that Shemar Moore (ex-Malcolm Winters, Young and Restless) would be reprising his role of Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson in a new spinoff, S.W.A.T. Exiles! In the upcoming series, Hondo is pulled out of retirement to lead a new S.W.A.T. unit made up of fresh new recruits. He’ll be forced to deal with the generational gap as he attempts to shape this group of outsiders into a functional team that can protect the city.

“Today’s a great day,” Moore enthused in an Instagram video. “To all my homies, fans and baby girls, to everybody out there around the world who has supported us for eight years — thank you. We couldn’t have done this without you. Eight years strong. And I know the sad news is we got canceled… But the good news is, we don’t stop fighting. And guess what happens when you don’t stop fighting: We won. S.W.A.T. ain’t going nowhere. Hondo ain’t going nowhere. There’s a new version of S.W.A.T. coming your way. And it’s going to be called S.W.A.T. Exiles. Hondo, back in the building. S.W.A.T., back in the building. Starts shooting this summer. Say it loud, say it proud, S.W.A.T. and Hondo back in the building. S.W.A.T. Exiles this summer!”
Moore earned legions of loyal soap fans when he joined the cast of Y&R in 1994 as Malcolm Winters, and before his exit in 2002, garnered three Daytime Emmy Award nominations, taking home the trophy for Outstanding Supporting Actor in 2000. He returned to the soap from 2004-05, then made a brief appearance for a couple of episodes in 2014 and again in 2019 for the funeral of Malcolm’s brother, Neil, played by the late Kristoff St. John. His last visit to Genoa City was in May 2023 for the dedication of the Neil Winters Jazz Lounge.
After leaving Y&R, Moore found success in prime-time, starring as Derek Morgan on the CBS series Criminal Minds from 2005-17. After he left the role, he was cast as Sergeant Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson on S.W.A.T., based on the ‘70s series of the same name. Although S.W.A.T. was canceled after six seasons, CBS reversed the decision, and it returned for a seventh and final season. The show was then renewed again for an eighth season, and Hondo’s story now continues with the spinoff, S.W.A.T. Exiles.
“My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable,” Moore declared in a statement. “We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide. I am excited for this next generation and iteration of S.W.A.T. with Sony. [President, Sony Pictures Television Studios] Katherine Pope, [Executive Producer] Neal H. Moritz, [Showrunner] Jason Ning, and I will keep the franchise thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”
“I couldn’t be more thrilled to partner with Sony to bring S.W.A.T. Exiles to life,” said showrunner Ning, who has previously worked on series like Lucifer, Perception, and The Expanse. “It’s an incredible honor to carry forward the legacy of a show that fans around the world have come to love. Working with Shemar Moore, who defines what it means to be a leading man, and introducing a new generation of characters into this world is a dream.”
Sony Pictures Television is producing and distributing the 10-episode series, with production currently scheduled to begin this summer in Los Angeles, using the same local crew who helped bring the original S.W.A.T. to life for audiences over the past eight seasons.
Added Pope, “We couldn’t be more excited to bring the next chapter of S.W.A.T. to life — both for our incredibly dedicated fans of the original franchise and for a new generation of viewers. We’re grateful to our incredible partners Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Jason Ning, and Shemar Moore for embarking on this journey with us. This team’s commitment to the global fanbase, to our beloved crew, and to our city runs deep!”
