GH’s Dr. Drake: Anatomy of a Cheater

Comments

When GENERAL HOSPITAL’s Patrick Drake cheated on his beloved wife Robin, the torrid tryst was as much about him as old flame Lisa. Jason Thompson puts Patrick’s motives under a microscope.Soap Opera Weekly: Does Patrick understand why he cheated?

Jason Thompson: I guess it was a little bit of weakness. She’s been coming on to him, and there’s the memory of what it used to be like. Then there was the thing with Steve.

Weekly: Yeah, what about that? Why was Patrick acting like a jealous lover?

Thompson: He has played a little bit of jealousy there, just to prove that he could probably get her back.

Weekly: So he was just basically weak?

Thompson: It was absolutely a weak moment. I talked to Bob [Guza Jr., GH’s head writer] about it months ago, and we agreed that it should be basically instantaneous; as soon as it was over, Patrick realized how stupid he was, and that everything he put on the line could be gone. I think Patrick’s really, really going to work his ass off to make sure that he doesn’t lose it.

Weekly: Is he going to come clean?

Thompson: He’s not being completely honest, because then he would be telling Robin about it. But he knows what he did, and it was the worst thing he’s ever done in his life. He says that. As far as cheating, I could only imagine what would be going through somebody’s head.

Weekly: Lisa specifically goaded him, claiming, “You’re not the old Patrick,” and, “You lost it; you’re domesticated…”

Thompson: Yeah, he’s trying to prove that he’s still man enough to do that. As much as he proclaims that he loves Robin and the marriage — which he truly does — Lisa knows that will push his buttons. Telling him that he’s not man enough to be what he was? That really goes right to Patrick’s core, and he responded. Just not in the right way!
