Genie Francis Remembers Late General Hospital Son Tyler Christopher: ‘So Vulnerable, So Pure’

Comments

Fans of General Hospital are in for a rare treat when Maurice Benard (Sonny) sits down with fellow Port Charles legend Genie Francis (Laura) for a candid conversation in a two-part installment of State of Mind, Benard’s mental health-focused YouTube series. In a clip of the first episode featuring Francis, which was shared exclusively on SoapHub, Benard and Francis shared memories of several of their dearly departed castmates, including the late Tyler Christopher, the Daytime Emmy-winner who originated the role of Laura’s firstborn son, Nikolas Cassadine.

Gone But Not Forgotten

Christopher passed away on October 31, 2023 at the age of 50 from what the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office determined was “positional asphyxia due to acute alcohol intoxication.” It was Benard who broke the tragic news, sharing on Instagram, “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Tyler Christopher. Tyler passed away this morning following a cardiac event in his San Diego apartment. Tyler was a truly talented individual that lit up the screen in every scene he performed and relished bringing joy to his loyal fans through his acting. Tyler was a sweet soul and wonderful friend to all of those who knew him. Tyler was an advocate for better mental health and substance use treatment who openly spoke about his struggles with bipolar depression and alcohol. We are beyond devastated by the loss of our dear friend and pray for his children and his father.” Christopher was survived by his two children, son Greyson, who was born in 2009, and daughter Boheme, who was born in 2015.

In the years prior to his death, Christopher had been candid about his mental health struggles — like Benard, he was diagnosed as bipolar — as well as alcohol addiction, and in 2022, he appeared on State of Mind, where he spoke openly about how his drinking and depression had led to a traumatic brain injury and a bout of homelessness. In his conversation with Benard, Christopher shared that he took his first drink at the age of 9 and had been a functioning addict for many years. But, he added, “In the last 10 years, it went the other way because, you know, you become an addict at 9 years old, fast-forward 40 years, at some point, you cannot survive it. At some point, it will kill you.”

The actor joined GH in 1996 as Laura’s surprise son, conceived off-screen during the years that Laura was kidnapped and held hostage on Cassadine Island not long after her storied wedding to Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) in 1981. It was a storyline pitched by Francis, who shared with Soap Opera Digest in 2013, “That material, I will pat myself on the back, was mine. It was me saying, ‘Look, Laura was gone long enough from the show that she could have had a baby and recovered and no one would be any the wiser.’ So, I pitched that to Wendy [Riche, then-executive producer] and [then-Head Writer Bob] Guza. The thing that really bugs me is that he won the Emmy for that and he didn’t even thank me! But it was my idea because I wanted Laura to have a secret and that gave me something to play.”

After playing Nikolas for three years, Christopher exited GH in 1999, but he reclaimed the role in 2003 and stayed until 2011, then came back again in 2013, airing for the final time in 2016. Prior to his death, he also starred on Days of Our Lives as Stefan O. DiMera from 2017-19.

In the preview of her State of Mind interview, when Benard prompts Francis to reflect on Christopher, she described him as “a beautiful angel. So beautiful — and so vulnerable. He was not equipped to live in this world. Not equipped,” she repeated. “So vulnerable, so pure; he couldn’t live in this dirty place.” After Benard shared the sad memory of his last in-person encounter with Christopher, who was clearly struggling, Francis said sadly, “Some people don’t make it to the other side of recovery.”

The first part of Francis’s intimate conversation with Benard will go live on November 16th, and the second part will begin streaming on November 23.
