General Hospital’s Kelly Thiebaud Remembers ‘Incredible’ Tyler Christopher During Embryo Theft Story (EXCL)
As Britt Westbourne settles back into life in Port Charles following her General Hospital resurrection, it’s safe to say that the red carpet hasn’t exactly been rolled out for her. She had to face an angry reaction from her mother, Liesl Obrecht, who wasn’t willing to let Britt off the hook for pretending to be dead for years, she landed a modest job at the hospital that doesn’t quite stack up to her previous position as chief of staff, and she’s only got a roof over her head (in what she has called “the hovel” above Bobbie’s) thanks solely to Jason’s generosity. On the plus side, though, her first encounter with Rocco Falconeri — the biological child of Lulu and Dante, who she infamously gave birth to after swiping their embryo — did go well, all things considered…. which understandably didn’t sit well with Lulu. Soap Opera Digest checked in with Kelly Thiebaud (Britt) about the show revisiting the story that helped put “The Britch” on the map.
About A Boy
Because Britt’s outrageous plot to pass Rocco off as her own son was pretty much treated like ancient history during Thiebaud’s last stint on the show, she was surprised to find out that Rocco finding out that Britt carried him, birthed him and raised him for much of the first year of his life — and his resulting curiosity about her — was part of the groundwork the show’s writers were laying in the lead-up to her return. “We hadn’t mentioned that storyline in years,” she notes. “It was kind of all forgiven and forgotten, and Britt had moved on from that.”
The actress has fond memories of that original storyline, which not only established Britt as a Grade A schemer but gave Thiebaud one of the biggest acting challenges she’d faced to that point in her career when Britt gave birth — on the floor of Wyndemere, with her greatest rival, Nurse Sabrina Santiago, forced to assist. Reports Thiebaud with a chuckle, “One of my best friends is pregnant and we were talking about GH and I was telling her how I gave birth on camera and she was like, ‘I have to watch it!’ So, I showed it to her and she was like, ‘It looks so natural. I was like, ‘Are you sure I’m not breathing too much?’ She was like, ‘No, you did such a great job!’ I was like, ‘Oh, good. Thanks!’ ”
Of course, in the end, Britt did pay a big price for her antics. When she got busted, not only did Britt lose “Ben” to his birth parents (who promptly renamed him), but she lost the love and respect of the man she was poised to marry, Lulu’s brother Nikolas Cassadine, who was played at the time by the late Tyler Christopher. And in true soap fashion, the timing couldn’t have been messier, as the truth came tumbling out at Nik and Britt’s engagement party!
“Honestly, that whole scene at the engagement party, with Nikolas finding out … To this day, that’s one of my favorites,” Thiebaud declares. “Tyler Christopher was so incredible, just on a regular basis, but in those particular scenes, he was so good. And I’ve watched it back several times and every time, in my mind, it’s just a complete home run in the soap world. He is so good, the emotion is so high, I thought the writing was so great … It’s such a good memory for me.”
