General Hospital’s Van Hansis Reveals Easter Egg in Lucas & Britt Scene

Comments

On General Hospital, Lucas Jones took a big risk to help Britt Westbourne (Kelly Thiebaud) secure a dose of her Huntington’s medication, which was under lock and key at Wyndemere and was critical to her ability to slip out of town — and out from under Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Cullum’s (Andrew Hawkes) control. When Lucas met up with Britt on the pier to hand off the drugs, his portrayer, Van Hansis, slipped in an unscripted reference to an iconic rom-com.

Utterly Clueless

Lucas and Britt have a messy history, dating all the way back to when Britt enlisted Lucas’s future ex-husband, Brad Cooper (Parry Shen), into her scheme to impregnate herself with an embryo belonging to Lucas’s cousin, Lulu (Alexa Havins), and her then-spouse, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna), resulting in Rocco’s (Finn Carr) birth. But in recent months, Lucas has come to see a softer side of his ob/gyn colleague, and when he found out that she was in danger from Sidwell, not only did he want to help, but he got his lover, Marco (Adrian Anchondo), on board, too.

This led to a surprisingly tender moment between Lucas and Britt in the March 24 episode of GH. After Britt confided that she and Jason (Steve Burton) were leaving town together, Lucas marveled, “Do you know what’s even crazier than the two of us finding our people during this disaster?” She shot him a skeptical look and asked, “What?” Lucas replied, “I think I might actually miss you. I mean, just a little bit, and probably sporadically, but still.”

Hansis revealed in his Instagram Stories that he ad-libbed a key word in that dialogue in order to pay homage to Clueless, the beloved and oft-quoted 1995 film starring Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd and the late Brittany Murphy, who passed away in 2009 at the age of 32. Over the relevant excerpt from Britt and Lucas’s conversation, Hansis wrote, “I’ve been nominated for 5 Daytime Emmys. My claim to fame though is being able to change a line to ‘sporadically’ in honor of the late, great Brittany Murphy.'”

He then showed a clip from the Clueless scene in question, in which Rudd’s character, Josh Lucas, tells Murphy’s character, Tai, “Be seeing ya!” and she responds, “Yeah, I hope not sporadically!”

The playful exchange between Britt and Lucas appears likely to be the last lighthearted moment either character will experience for a while. After they parted ways, Cullum showed up on the pier and held Britt at gunpoint. Jason arrived and the men began to brawl, and to stop Cullum from attacking Jason, Rocco shot the dirty WSB director! Lucas, meanwhile, was gushing to his sister, Carly, about the bright future ahead for him and Marco, unaware that Cullum had stabbed him and left him to die. But if more opportunities to play comedy do present themselves, Hansis told Digest last year that there’s no better scene partner than Thiebaud. “She is so funny,” he raved. “She kills me with how funny she is.”
