General Hospital’s Laura Wright Says Carly ‘Will Do Whatever It Takes’ To Protect Michael (EXCL)

Comments
On General Hospital, notorious mama bear Carly Spencer has reason to fear that the firstborn of her cubs, Michael Corinthos (Rory Gibson), may go down for shooting her ex-lover, Congressman Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison). And if history is any indication, there’s nothing she won’t do to make sure he stays out of jail. Soap Opera Digest checked in with Laura Wright (Carly) about the unfolding drama.

By Any Means Necessary

According to the actress, Carly is worried about more than Michael getting accused of the shooting — she actually thinks he might be guilty. “She knows from how he’s acting that he’s not 100 percent telling the truth,” Wright points out. “She thinks there’s a chance that he could have done it, 100 percent. Does she think he 100 percent did it? No! But there is a chance, and she’s said that a couple of times: ‘There’s a chance Michael did it, there’s a chance!’ ”

Michael had a good deal of motive to pull the trigger — but so, too, did Carly, so she’s not necessarily judging. However, “Of course she would care [if he was actually responsible for the shooting],” Wright says. “She would care because she doesn’t want her son to hurt somebody. You don’t want to see your child kill somebody or try to, or to be so angry that he’s going to hurt someone in a way that could put him in prison forever. She doesn’t want him to go to jail. And she’ll do everything she can to stop that from happening.”

And as Elizabeth observed in the October 8 episode, that “everything” includes increasing the odds that the PCPD suspect her of the crime. “Carly will do whatever she has to do to protect her kids,” Wright declares. “Whatever it takes. Even take the blame herself.”
Michael, meanwhile, has been quite busy himself trying to deflect the PCPC’s attention, particularly by trying to shore up an alibi for the night of the shooting that pivots around Jacinda. And, grown man that he is, it’s not necessarily his first choice to have Carly take it upon herself to keep him out of the cops’ crosshairs. But Carly being Carly, the chances that she’ll drop her quest are pretty slim, even if he asks her to back off. “Never!” scoffs Wright. “Never, never, never.”
While the whodunit is giving both Carly and Michael some sleepless nights, the actress says that she’s having a blast continuing the mother/son dynamic between Carly/Michael opposite Rory Gibson, who assumed the role of Michael from Chad Duell earlier this year. “I love Rory!” she smiles. “He is so great — always prepared, comes to set, knows his lines, ready to play. We have a great time together! I love working with him. It’s a lot of fun.”
