General Hospital’s Cynthia Watros: ‘Nina Will Never Give Up’ On Winning Back Willow’s Trust
The truth is out to Willow Tait on General Hospital: Her mother, Nina Reeves, slept with the man she is poised to marry, Drew Cain. And while a major question remains unanswered — Will she still marry Drew?! — it’s pretty clear that the mother/daughter relationship Nina has fought so hard to build with Willow is back where it started: in the dumpster! In a new interview with TV Insider, Cynthia Watros broke down the devastating impact of the events on her character, Nina.
Secrets Are No Fun
According to the actress, Nina didn’t come clean with Willow about her sexual relationship with Drew because she was scared it would cause Willow to reject her. “I think Nina really wanted to tell Willow, but the fear of losing Willow triumphed over wanting to be honest with her daughter,” Watros noted.
At the eleventh hour, Nina did plan to confess the terrible truth to Willow — but by that point, Willow had already found out about it from Curtis. Watros revealed that in an unscripted moment, “before Nina left to finally tell Willow the truth, I interjected, ‘This is it. It’s enough. This is enough.’ And I think I was just playing that Nina was at the end of the line, end of the road.”
By then, of course, it was too late, and Willow ripped into Nina for her months of deception. Because of her close real-life relationship with Katelyn MacMullen (Willow), Watros shared that “doing these scenes, it’s easy in one respect, because she’s so prepared, and she’s so on it, and it’s difficult in the other respect because I love her so much.”
Following their heated confrontation, “Nina is heartbroken,” Watros sums up. But while she may be down, she is far from out. Watros declared that “Nina will never give up” trying to mend her shattered trust with Willow — and she is solidly Team Nina in rooting for Willow to ultimately find a way to forgive her. “I hope they come back together. I love that Nina gets to have family, because it does mean so much to her.”
In the meantime, Watros sighed, “Cynthia’s heart breaks for Nina and to see what happens with this relationship. Willow can’t forgive her mother and we’re back at square one.”
