General Hospital: Steve Burton Reveals When He’s Returning to the Soap as Jason Morgan

Comments

When Steve Burton announced back in February that he was taking some time off from General Hospital, he assured fans that it was only temporary and that he would be back sometime in the summer. But as soon as Jason was carted off by the WSB in the March 25 episode after he took the fall for shooting WSB Agent Cullum (Andrew Hawkes), the question on many viewers’ minds was when he would return. During a recent episode of his That’s Awesome podcast, which he co-hosts with Bradford Anderson (Spinelli), the actor addressed when he was due back at the studio.

Homeward Bound

During the podcast episode, talk turned to the many questions that Burton and Anderson get from fans during their personal appearances around the country. Burton noted that the the most common query at the moment is when he would be bringing Jason home to Port Charles. “Yes, I am coming back to the show,” he reiterated. “I start in June, so I’ll be back for sure.”

Back in March, Burton explained that he was taking a short-term hiatus from GH in order to spend more time with his new wife, Michelle Lundstrom, and their blended family of her two daughters and his own children, Makena, Jack and Brooklyn. “I’m just excited to take a break,” he said at the time, “and spend time with the family and just go live a little.”

The Great Escape

Another thing that viewers are wondering is exactly where in the world Jason is being imprisoned, which remains a mystery on screen. But wherever the WSB is holding his alter ego, Burton is sure his alter ego is on top of things and planning his escape, making note of critical details like, “How many steps to here? How long does it take to get to here? Like, all this stuff. So I have to assume that Jason’s probably doing something like that to get out.”

While Jason wouldn’t necessarily try to escape from the PCPD, being held by the WSB in some far-flung international prison is a completely different story. “If you’re in a foreign country being held, you’re going to be trying to escape,” Burton insisted. “You’re not trying to escape Port Charles prison. You’re trying to get out on good behavior there.”

Since Jason was forcibly removed from Port Charles, his loved ones have desperate to figure out where he is and have held onto hope of clearing his name. Meanwhile, Jason’s son Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) has floated the idea of following his father’s footsteps into the mob in order to avenge him, Sonny (Maurice Benard) has hired renegade Ethan Lovett (Nathan Dean) to join the Corinthos organization, and Jason’s paramour, Britt (Kelly Thiebaud) is no closer to breaking free of the evil clutches of Sidwell (Carlo Rota) and Cullum. So the stage is certainly set for Jason’s return to be a rich one on several storyline fronts.

If Burton starts filming again in June, fans should expect to see Jason back on screen by August — the show takes a month-long production break in July, and in the lead-up to that hiatus, it banks episodes further in advance than it does at other times throughout the year. But will he escape WSB custody, be rescued, or even released if the truth comes out that he wasn’t the one who shot Cullum? And can he get back home in time to keep Danny from doing something dangerous? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
