General Hospital Stars Maurice Benard and Vanessa Marcil Surprise Sonny and Brenda Super-Fan
General Hospital stars Maurice Benard (Sonny) and Vanessa Marcil (ex-Brenda) made a longtime GH super-fan’s 60th birthday one she’ll never forget by making surprise appearances at her milestone celebration.
A Night to Remember for a Lifelong GH Fan
The birthday girl’s daughter, Mercedes Gonzalez Mayo, planned the surprises for her mother, Mabel Gonzalez, who has watched General Hospital for 47 years.
At Gonzalez’s birthday party, the guest of honor was first surprised with a video message from Benard, who sang “Happy Birthday” before joking, “I’m sorry I couldn’t be there — I have business to take care of in Port Charles. But I’m sending you an old lover of mine…”
The presence of Marcil was then announced, and Gonzalez was visibly stunned and shaking in disbelief as her favorite GH actress materialized in front of her and pulled her into a hug. Marcil then joined the party, posing for pictures with Gonzalez and other guests.
Mayo shared a video capturing the incredible surprise to Instagram. “Months of planning this surprise for my mom @mabelnietogonzalez and there was truly no greater feeling than watching her reaction and giving her the surprise of her life on her 60th birthday!” began Mayo’s caption.
She went on to write, “@mauricebenard & @vanessamarcillovesk I can’t thank you enough! Vanessa is an icon, legend, beyond genuine, and truly beautiful inside and out! ⭐️ Thanks for making my mom’s birthday dreams come true!”
Mayo noted that her mother has been a fan of GH since she was 13 years old. “For the last 47 years she has tuned in every Monday through Friday and has not missed one episode,” she said. “I will never forget getting home from school every day and having no choice but to watch it since it came on at 3 PM. My brothers and I low key loved it, though, and also became life long GH fans. We literally grew up watching Brenda & Sonny!”
The devoted daughter concluded, “This was such a special moment for not only my mom but our whole family! Truly a memory we will never forget. 🥹”
The comments on the birthday party video filled with well wishes, including one from another GH star, Rena Sofer (ex-Lois), a close friend of Marcil’s. “The greatest woman giving another great woman a birthday to remember!!!” Sofer wrote. “Happy birthday!!!”
Gonzalez responded to Sofer’s message with, “OMG!! I just can’t!!… I’m dyinggg🙌❤️” and added, “@rena.sofer You’re another great woman.. LOIS 🔥 I just can’t believe this… thank you so very much.. 🙏❤️ Birthday keeps getting better and better 🥹🙌”
