Comments

The Thursday, January 8 episode of General Hospital was packed full of twists and turns as Willow’s (Katelyn MacMullen) trial came to a close. Drew (Cameron Mathison) went off the rails trying to convince the jury that Michael (Rory Gibson) was the guilty party, Gio (Giovanni Mazza) did his part to help solve the mystery of who was in Drew’s house that night, Dante (Dominic Zamprogna) grappled with the fact that the PCPD may have had built a case around the wrong person, and Trina (Tabyana Ali) and Kai (Jens Austin Astrup) made a shocking realization — the true identity of the shooter!Get the full breakdown below!

Mr. Brightside

Arriving at Sonny’s just as Gio was headed out, Kristina told her nephew that she hoped she’d get to hear his next violin performance, but he hedged that he wasn’t sure when he’d play again. Next, Kristina told her father that she felt torn between supporting Michael during the trial and wanting Alexis to get Willow acquitted so the family didn’t lose access to Scout. She also worried that her mom was building a case for the prosecution to arrest Michael, but Sonny reassured her that it was just a legal tactic and didn’t necessarily mean her brother would be arrested.

Mad Man

At the courthouse, Trina updated Kai that Gio was headed to the Quartermaines’ to hopefully suss out the source of the mystery ringtone. Inside the courtroom, Alexis put Drew on the stand, whereupon Drew declared that his wife had been falsely accused of shooting him. During his testimony about Michael’s anger over Willow’s affair, Drew shared that he’d been attacked by his brother, Jason, at Michael’s request. Justine objected to Drew’s statement that Jason was a hitman/mob enforcer and Alexis’s attempt to submit Jason’s criminal history into evidence (on the grounds that Jason was irrelevant to the case), and when Sullivan agreed, Drew glared at the jury as the judge ordered his comments stricken from the record.

Next, Drew testified that Michael had assaulted him at the Metro Court Hotel, and Justine flashed back to the day she hid at Sonny’s house while Drew attempted to blackmail the mobster. Alexis wrapped up her questioning by asking Drew about his and Willow’s decision to reunite the night he was shot, and Justine objected when Drew speculated that after he’d informed Carly, she likely ran straight to her son with the news.

Kristina got to the courtroom as Justine began her cross-examination of the witness. She first brought up Michael’s corporate takeover of Aurora Media after Drew and Willow slept together, angering Drew, and then further poked the bear by asking if he had seduced his nephew’s wife. The congressman got increasingly more riled up by Turner’s questions, and when the Acting D.A. asked if it was true that Judge Heran had cited his and Willow’s relationship as the reason she lost custody of her children, Drew seethed that that was a lie.

Next, Willow was shocked when Justine presented a wire transfer receipt for $1 million made out to Judge Heran, dated the same day of the custody ruling, that was found in Drew’s safe by investigators the night of his shooting. Trying to remain calm, Drew claimed the receipt was a fake, planted by Michael, but exploded when Justine asked if he had proof. Willow begged Alexis to intervene, but the defense attorney just hushed her client as Drew roared that nothing he did was ever good enough, while Michael, the family golden boy who got everything, had turned into a homicidal maniac because Drew took his wife. “You are gonna rot in prison. And my wife and I are going to take our kids back home where they belong!” he shouted at Michael, leaving Willow and the rest of those in the courtroom stunned by his outburst.

With no further questions from the prosecution and no redirect from the defense, Judge Sullivan called a recess. As Drew stepped down from the stand, Nina raced to him, accusing him of potentially costing Willow the trial and ordering him to stay away from her daughter. In the hallway, Trina told Kai that they had to get the truth about Michael before court resumed.

Covert Mission

At home at the Quartermaine mansion, Brook Lynn and Dante bickered over Chase’s suspension, but he ultimately acknowledged that her husband may have been right about Willow being innocent. When Brook Lynn wondered if he’d changed his mind about Willow being innocent, Dante clarified that he meant both he and Chase had blind spots in the investigation (Willow for Chase, Michael for Dante). Recalling an earlier conversation where Dante had said he didn’t think Michael had actually framed Willow, Brook Lynn asked if something had changed, but before Dante could answer, he spotted Gio in the foyer.

Gio said he wanted to hang out with Wiley, hoping to distract him from Willow’s trial, so Brook Lynn went upstairs to get the little boy. Alone with Dante, Gio asked if he actually thought there was a chance Michael set Willow up. After replying that it didn’t matter what he thought because it was in the court’s hands, Dante exited. Later, as Brook Lynn set Gio and Wiley up with video games, Wiley frantically searched for his phone. Brook Lynn explained to Gio that Michael’s scared son never went anywhere without his phone these days, and she hoped for his and Amelia’s sake that the drama involving his parents would all be over soon. Then, Brook Lynn decided to visit Sonny, and Gio got a text from Trina that they were waiting for him to have Wiley make a phone call.

Put A Ring(tone) On It

Back at the courthouse, Trina and Kai observed as Michael spoke with Dante and Kristina in the hallway about Drew’s outburst. Kristina mused that it seemed like Drew was trying to set Michael up for shooting him, and Dante, with attitude, asked his brother, “Is that what he’s trying to do? Set you up for a crime you didn’t commit?” Then, Michael got a call from his son — but instead of “Twinkle, Twinkle,” the ringtone was Wiley’s voice saying, “Daddy, it’s Wiley. Pick up.” After confirming with Gio that the video game was age-appropriate for Wiley to play, Michael hung up, and Kristina commented on the customized ringtone, which Michael explained he got while in Germany. Once the siblings went back into the courtroom, Trina and Kai realized Michael might not be the shooter since it was unlikely that it was his phone they heard in Drew’s house that night. Gio checked in with Trina, who shared that the information he’d gotten for them was helpful, even if it wasn’t what they were expecting to hear.

Inside the courtroom, Alexis informed Nina, Drew, and Willow that the only way she could salvage the case after Drew’s unhinged behavior was to put Willow on the stand. Once she was sworn in, Alexis asked Willow about the day she found Michael waiting for her at Elizabeth’s house. Willow replied that her ex had asked her to attend family therapy the next day so she could see her kids, but she was arrested during the session. She also stated that she believed Michael had shot Drew and framed her for the crime.

Alexis’s next questions focused on Willow’s bone marrow transplant, with Mrs. Cain calling her husband her hero and proclaiming that she fell in love with Drew because he was by her side during her recovery. She also testified that, following his affair with her mother, she’d reunited with Drew because she never doubted his love for her. Defending her husband’s earlier outburst, Willow claimed that Drew’s first instinct was always to protect her because he knew how badly she’d been hurt by Michael keeping her from their children. As her final question, Alexis asked the witness if she believed she was on trial as a direct result of Michael’s premeditated actions. “Yes,” Willow confirmed. “This is what Michael wanted.”

Guilty As Charged

When it was Justine’s turn to question Willow, she read from Judge Heran’s custody decision that Willow had prioritized her relationship with Drew to the detriment of her children. Insisting that Drew loved her children, Willow proclaimed that she did not blame her husband for losing custody. Justine then presented a photograph of the weapon used in the shooting, and asked Willow if she had ever touched the firearm. Willow had a flashback of taking the gun out of the locked safe (while wearing gloves) and holding it while she fought back tears. Back in the present, Willow denied having ever touched that gun.

She remained calm and collected as Justine continued to question her about her state of mind during her aimless driving the night Drew was shot, but additional flashbacks showed Willow recalled taking the gun out of the glove compartment of her car. When Justine mentioned the video footage placing Willow near the scene of the crime, Alexis objected, claiming there was no such footage. Taking one final attempt to get Willow to turn on Drew, Justine questioned if Willow’s life had improved with Drew in it, and Mrs. Cain was adamant that Drew was the only person she trusted with her children since he would do anything to keep their family together. For her last question, Turner asked Willow what she would do for her children, and Willow then flashed back to shooting Drew twice in the back! She then replied with conviction that she would do “anything” for them.

Following Willow’s testimony, the defense rested its case, and Judge Sullivan announced he’d hear closing arguments the next morning. Kristina tried to reassure Michael that even if Willow was exonerated, it didn’t mean he would be charged, but Michael was more concerned about Willow and Drew being back in the kids’ lives. Praising her client for her compelling testimony, Alexis confided that they may have won the case, while Justine lamented to Dante that Willow may have saved herself.

Back at the Q estate, Gio did his best to cheer up Wiley when the little boy said he was missing both of his parents. Later, while Gio went on a cookie hunt, Wiley picked up his phone. At the courthouse, Kai and Trina were discussing who else might have been inside Drew’s house the night he was shot when they heard Willow’s phone ring with the “Twinkle, Twinkle” tune! Answering the call, Willow cried happy tears as she promised her son she would see him soon. Kai and Trina exchanged a look of disbelief.
