General Hospital: 45 Years Ago Today, Luke Spencer Stopped the Cassadines and Saved the World

On September 21, 1981, General Hospital‘s Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) saved Port Charles when he disabled the Cassadine clan’s diabolical weather machine. On the 45th anniversary of this milestone storyline moment, here’s a look back at the Ice Princess saga that captivated GH viewers.

Luke, Laura and the Ice Princess Saga

In 1980, Edward Quartermaine’s (David Lewis) niece, Alexandria Quartermaine (Renee Anderson), came to town, gung-ho about a new business she was undertaking: manufacturing synthetic diamonds. She had competition in this market from the nefarious and notorious Cassadine family, so in 1981, she hired Luke Spencer to track down the clan.

The storied bromance of Luke and Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers) began when Robert held Luke at gunpoint, demanding to know the location of the Ice Princess. Scorpio later explained to Luke that the Ice Princess was a statue — or more precisely, the world’s largest uncut diamond. Alexandria had stolen it, painted it black and shipped it to Port Charles, but it mysteriously went missing in transit from Rio de Janeiro.

As 1981 unfolded, Luke, Robert and Alexandria all went hunting for the Ice Princess — and so, too, did a debonair newcomer who went by the name Tony Castle. Tony Castle was actually Tony Cassadine (Andre Landzaat).

Luke became especially motivated to find the statue when his beloved Laura Webber Baldwin (Genie Francis) accepted his marriage proposal. Scorpio warned him that in the wrong hands, the Ice Princess could do serious global damage. But Alex, who was revealed to be in cahoots with Tony, her lover, got to it first.

As the story goes, Alex had contracted scientist James Duvall to concoct a valuable formula for synthetic diamonds, which also had the ability to control the weather. The formula for what known as carbonic snow was hidden in the base of the Ice Princess.

Duvall attacked Alexandria, who fatally clocked him over the head with the statue before sailing off on the Cassadine yacht with Tony, his brothers, Victor (Thaao Penghlis) and Mikkos (John Colicos), Victor’s movie-star squeeze, Tiffany (Sharon Wyatt), and a handful of other colorful characters.

Luke, Laura and Robert — who was actually one of the good guys, an undercover operative for the WSB — all managed to stow away, and the yacht arrived on the Cassadines’ secret island.

On the island, Mikkos announced his plan to build a weather machine capable of freezing the world — and he intended to start with Port Charles, to show everyone he meant business.

Tiffany found Robert on the island and teamed up with him, Luke and Laura to find a way to gain access Mikkos’s heavily guarded control center. It was a race against time as Mikkos began dropping the temperature in P.C., creating blizzard conditions, while Luke, Laura and Robert were discovered and taken captive.

Mikkos attempted to kill Luke by tossing him into an ice chamber, where several bodies (including those of Alex and Tony) had already been frozen. The two men got into a violent scuffle and it was Mikkos who ended up in the ice chamber and froze to death.

Finally, Luke was able to get into the control room. Moments before Port Charles stood to be destroyed, he figured out the password and typed it in — “I-C-E-P-R-I-N-C-E-S-S” — thus saving Port Charles and the world at large. When Luke, Laura and Robert returned to Port Charles, they were hailed as heroes.

And though Luke and Laura planned to tie the knot in a modest ceremony, the citizens of Port Charles wouldn’t hear of it, insisting that the couple to whom they owed their lives needed to be unite in holy matrimony in grand fashion. That led to another unforgettable moment in General Hospital history: Luke and Laura’s lavish wedding, which aired in November 1981 and set ratings records.
