Fear Thee Well

Soap fans may recognize Shamika Cotton from the third season of SOAPnet’s reality series, I WANNA BE A SOAP STAR and her 2006 stint as a doctor on AS THE WORLD TURNS. Since that time, the young actress has kept busy with appearances on LAW & ORDER and THE WIRE and work in New York City theater. Her lead role in the 2008 production of Missives was praised by The New York Times as “thoughtful and controlled.”

Now, Cotton is starring on FEARnet.com in the Web original miniseries STREAM, a psychological thriller. Cotton raves, “I got to work with Whoopi Goldberg. I’m still in disbelief. I play the young Whoopi, the character’s name is Young Jodi.” So what was it like working with the legend? “Whoopi was unbelievable,” praises Cotton. “She was so, for lack of a better word, down-to-earth. Being around her was very humbling. I’ve been a fan of hers since Jumping Jack Flash. I remember I wanted to be a hacker because of that film when I was really little,” chuckles Cotton. “Since I’m playing the younger version of Whoopi’s character, I had to study her mannerisms. I tried to focus on how she walked and how she held her face and how she talked and just things like that.”

The series, says Cotton, “is basically about facing your fears, but Jodi kind of struggles with experiencing life in the past, present and future. Whoopi is the future and I get to be the past and the present. It jumps around a lot back and forth. I think fans will definitely be pulled in.
