Last week, things were all warm and fuzzy between EJ and Belle on Days of Our Lives after EJ confessed his genuine feelings for his former sister-in-law. This week? Not so much, after Brady informs Belle about Ava’s claims that EJ was involved in her kidnapping. The Salem DA doesn’t take the news well, and the whole ugly mess leaves her in quite a predicament.

Regrets, I Have A Few

“I think in every moment of every day that Belle spends with EJ, Belle is regretting their relationship,” pronounces her portrayer, Martha Madison.

Confronting EJ about what she’s learned elicits the usual response: EJ’s adamant denials about the whole thing. “These are the moments Belle realizes that even if EJ is telling the truth, she can’t trust him. She doesn’t believe him,” contends Madison. “And Belle knows that you can’t have a real relationship with someone you don’t trust, so this is something that she is grappling with every second of every day.”

And while it goes without saying that Belle is disgusted with EJ, she’s also “disgusted with herself,” insists Madison. “She’s disgusted with allowing herself to again be duped by this guy — and for what reason? This is the most illogical thing about her. It’s her inability to see all of this for what it really is.”

Particularly since it was just a few days earlier that Belle urged EJ to come clean about any other bad things he might have done that could come between them, yet he remained mum. “Again, it just comes down to trust,” points out Madison. “Belle was trying to open [the conversation] up and say, ‘Listen, I get that you’re a dangerous person and have made tons of mistakes. If you want me to be with you anyway, honesty is going to be the answer. You have to tell me the truth.’ But he, of course, doesn’t because he can’t. That’s just not who he is.”

Skeptical of EJ’s denial about Ava’s accusations, Belle expresses her regret over resuming their relationship. Meanwhile, she doesn’t know the half of it regarding his criminal activity. Namely, the fact that EJ has been holding Rafe captive for weeks. When she does learn the truth, Madison anticipates that Belle is going to feel “like an idiot,” proclaims the actress. “It’s like, ‘I can’t believe I keep trying to trust this guy when he keeps showing me who he is.’ It’s an internal battle for her.”

Of course, as the district attorney, Belle could likely be tasked with having to prosecute her lover. But will she really be able to? “Yes, I think she will,” proclaims Madison firmly. “The one thing Belle always gets right is her moral calculations. Sometimes it takes her a while to do it, but when she makes the calculation, she knows the difference between right and wrong. Belle is committed to her job, and she’s committed to a just outcome. But she also is so attracted to EJ…”

As for what it all means for the future of EJ and Belle as a couple, Madison muses, “I don’t know that any relationship that is driven by this deep-seated illogical passion is ever over. I think Belle wishes it was over at times. I think they both wish it could end at times, but there’s just this draw between them that takes over, and they go against their better judgment. So I don’t know. It’s like a drug, right? EJ is Belle’s drug… It’s that whole bad boy thing. EJ is always in the back of her mind.”
