Carolyn’s Opinion of the Emmys

Comments

What a show, huh? I don’t know how it looked on TV, but in person I have to say this Daytime Emmys was one of the best in years. I liked the clever way they infused Vegas’s biggest acts and performers into the Dick Clark tribute (Cher! Barry Manilow! Garth Brooks!) and The Lion King never fails to give goosebumps when those amazing “animals” come down the aisles. Of course soap fans are griping that there weren’t enough soap moments, but we all have to remember that the Daytime Emmys honor game shows and talk shows, too. It is too bad, though, that Dr. Oz was too busy giving a colonoscopy to accept his award.

Yes, it’s disappointing to fans of NBC and ABC that CBS virtually swept the awards (except for GH’s directing nod and Julie Berman‘s Younger Lead Actress award), but what a nice tribute to our now-defunct ATWT that three of the four big awards went to its actors. Much better than the actual on-air tribute, which took about one minute to honor a 54 year-old show THAT AIRS ON CBS. The Blue Man Group got more screen time! Not cool. But wasn’t Regis funny?

Now about the parties… it’s so much fun to watch soap stars mingle and cut loose! Gina Tognoni and Laura Wright had their heads together laughing the whole dinner… Tuc Watkins and JP Lavoisier enjoyed some quality time with their Paw, Bob WoodsJulie Pinson brought her Emmy to the DAYS party, prompting a round of applause and lots of stars posing with it (and okay, me too). A few AMC stars asked me how Thorsten Kaye is doing (great!) and are pleased he is coming back to film Kendall’s return in July. Can’t AMC write a juicy story worthy of his talents and work out a deal where Thorsten flies back and forth to LA? “We’re working on it,” whispered an exec.

B&B and Y&R hosted the party of the weekend at Tryst in The Wynn. Leave it to Brad Bell to celebrate his TWO Emmy wins with a huge party in a cavernous club complete with a four-story waterfall, outdoor gambling, B&B and Y&R’s logos emblazoned on a giant rock wall, and a few thousand of his closest friends. The club had paid go-go dancers, but they couldn’t hold a candle to Michelle Stafford, center stage on the dance floor the whole night — until she spotted Maura West and ran over to congratulate her on her win. Joshua Morrow and his wife Tobe tore it up, too. Christian LeBlanc is no slouch on the dance floor, either. I wonder if he can be hired for parties.

The mark of a successful Emmy party is when actors from all the other shows crash, so kudos to the Bell shows for once again raising the bar. (Wouldn’t you love to be a fly on the wall at the next Bell family gathering? Brad’s won Best Show two years running now, beating Maria who holds the title of number one show for her entire tenure.) It was great to see Lauralee. She popped in to congratulate her brother and party a little, then headed upstairs with her husband, Scott. “The slots are calling,” she explained.

I stayed until the party’s sweaty end, naturally. Favorite conversations: Doug Davidson, Ronn Moss, Leann Hunley, Michael Park, Kyle Lowder, Galen Gering, Maria Bell, Brad Bell, Daniel Goddard and Michelle Stafford, of course. Frankly, I was embarrassed for everyone who left before it ended. How do you leave a ROCKING Emmy party full of all the cool people in your industry? Especially when Jeanne Cooper is holding court in a booth until the wee hours? If you’re going to bed before this 80 year-old dynamo — IN VEGAS — it’s time to reassess your priorities.

Okay, off to the pool! More in a future opinion column…
