Beyond the Gates Comings & Goings: Ben Gavin Breaks His Silence on Derek’s Dramatic Exit
The community of Fairmont Crest was rocked in the May 20 episode of Beyond the Gates when heroic firefighter Derek Baldwin came to a tragic end saving the life of Jacob (Jibre Hordges). Original cast member Ben Gavin opened up about his alter ego’s demise and his plans for the future in a new interview with TV Insider.
A Dramatic Farewell
An original cast member of the show, which premiered in February 2025, Gavin learned last December that Derek was going to be shot at the climax of the plasma ring storyline and later die of his wounds in the hospital. He shared with the outlet that the news was “definitely a shocker,” but he accepted that his character’s demise served the greater storyline.
“They made it pretty clear that this was something that they needed,” he explained, “and for the sake of the story, it couldn’t just be anyone. It had to be someone that they started to really care about to hook the audience, and I understood that.”
While Gavin appreciated that Derek would die a hero, he said, “it didn’t make it any less difficult to swallow.” Still, he noted, “Derek didn’t have a family, didn’t have parents around, and he didn’t have a job, so I knew there was a chance of being an expendable character.”

Once his final scenes were wrapped, the cast and crew came together to celebrate Gavin’s time on the soap. “They had a big send-off for me, and actors who weren’t even working that day showed up,” he recalled. “I mean, the tears that were flowing from my castmates and crew family were really heartwarming. It left me feeling like I made the impact on the people of this show that I could only hope to make. They weren’t just sad for Derek, they were sad to lose me as a castmate, as a colleague, and that meant a lot.”
While Derek may not have always been widely embraced by viewers, Gavin said he was grateful for the level of engagement the character inspired. “I thank [the fans] for sticking with it, and for all their wonderful criticism and their wonderful support,” he declared. “I’ve never seen a fan group so highly invested in the characters. It’s amazing.”
As for his own next chapter, Gavin reported that he is currently shopping around a TV pilot titled Cougar, based on his character from the 2025 film Winterset. But given that the actor said that he feels “truly blessed” to have been a part of BTG, he’d be happy to return to the soap for a dream sequence, as Derek’s evil twin, or whatever else the writers come up with. “That’s my family, and they changed my life for the better,” Gavin declared. “If they call my name, I’ll be there.”
