Apprentice 3 Update #16

Comments

The most important task for THE APPRENTICE’s final two candidates, Kendra and Tana, was already underway as the May 12 episode began. Street Smarts took on Book Smarts in one final battle, as the candidates knew that even if they each rocked their particular house, only one woman would be the true victor.

The backdrop of each challenge was appropriately competition-based. Kendra had to run a Fight Night 2 tournament as part of the Best Buy Video Game World Championship, with a full-size boxing ring, and a huge screen on which the 16 finalists (a familiar number for reality shows) could play the boxing game. Thousands of teenage viewers who do not live in mansions started drooling; as Mr. Trump might say, “This is a big deal, folks.” Kendra had full control of the joystick — er, controller’s the modern term — for most of her task, with her three dedicated teammates, Danny, Erin and Michael, capably pitching in and making the most of the Webster Hall space they were given.

Putting together an enormous event, the NYC2012 Athlete Challenge (an Olympics in New York promotion, complete with stars such as Bruce Jenner and Michael Phelps), Tana was wildly optimistic as little problems — oh, like there being no American flag for the governor to walk in with, and no one having proofread the program — dogged her. Carolyn noticed that Tana was quick to blame her one-day employees, Brian, Chris and Kristen, for each problem; viewers noticed that she stopped to watch practically every part of the event.

Most of the Olympics event at Chelsea Piers went smoothly, after some communication hurdles; no major disasters occurred during the show. Wrapping up her big day amid a quick conversation or two with 2012 staffers, Tana couldn’t have been more pleased with her efforts and couldn’t have been more glad to bid her temps farewell. Meanwhile, the ever-busy Kendra watched the electronic competition delight the hundreds of button-pressing attendees, as Mr. Trump was knocked out by a young woman…in the high-tech boxing game. After she took the mike to thank the event’s sponsors, Kendra’s parting with her employees — make that colleagues — was sweet, topped by a warm group hug.

The boardroom opened up the latent fissure between the women for the first time in weeks, as the professional and personal claims Kendra and Tana made about themselves and each other made up for lost tension. Kendra correctly noted that she had a better win record, but Tana smartly recalled that her opponent was the last Magna candidate to become Project Manager. Mr. Trump made sure each woman was proud of her success, but completely unclear as to who his choice would be. Bringing in the candidates who helped them was one heck of a way to keep them in the dark, and we’ll hear what Kendra’s thrilled trio and Tana’s “Three Stooges” have to say in next week’s live finale, where the Donald will announce who becomes his latest hard-working, much-respected and well-paid apprentice.
