Meet Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn)
High-powered attorney Alexis Davis, née Natasha Davidovitch, was raised as the niece of her philandering father, Mikkos Cassadine. Helena, Mikkos’ lethal and jealous wife, murdered Alexis’ mother, Kristen, in front of a young Alexis. Alexis went to a prestigious American boarding school and accepted her “cousin” (really half brother) Stefan’s offer to put her through college. She eventually graduated from the law school at Yale at the top of her class and arrived in Port Charles in 1996.
Meet Sam (Kelly Monaco)
Salvage diver Sam McCall was raised almost exclusively by her con-artist father, Jack, after her mother Evelyn abandoned her and brother Danny. Evelyn was later killed in a fire that Sam confessed to causing — though mentally challenged Danny had actually done the deed. In 2003, Sam came to Port Charles on the trail of the Dead Man’s Hand — playing cards that she believed had brought bad luck to the McCall family for generations.

When Alexis and Sam keep it in the family, they really keep it in the family. Alexis became the mouthpiece for the notorious Sonny, and it led to more than the typical lawyer/client relationship. After a one-night stand, Alexis realized she was pregnant with Sonny’s baby, but kept mum since Sonny was on the comeback trail with Carly. Alexis named her ex, Ned, as the baby’s father, but of course the truth eventually came out. A few years later, Sonny fled a crime scene with Sam at gunpoint. The two bonded and wound up having a hot affair. He reunited with Carly, and Sam realized she was pregnant — and she, too, kept mum. Sam named Sonny’s enforcer Jason as her baby’s father, but the truth eventually came out.
Connecting the dots
•In 2004, Alexis and Sonny’s daughter, Kristina, was diagnosed with leukemia. Her only hope was a bone-marrow transplant from a family member. Sonny, Alexis, Ric and Morgan (Sonny’s son) were ruled out as marrow matches, leaving Sam and Sonny’s unborn baby as Kristina’s only hope. Alexis tried to convince Sam to donate her daughter’s bone marrow. A stressed-out Sam went into premature labor and her baby was stillborn. Thankfully, the stem cells were still viable and a match for Kristina. And now fans know why….

Curious, Sam asked for posthumous blood tests — which showed that Danny and Sam were not related! Armed with this revelation, Sam was determined to find her birth mother. Sam’s starting point? Her date and state of birth: May 11, 1980, in Maine.
