1986 was a year of ch-ch-changes for the Soap Opera Digest Awards. The voting process was revised -- ballots for daytime and prime-time were in one issue instead of three -- and voting patterns changed, putting new faces in the winner's circle.

DAYS OF OUR LIVES remained the front-runner, collecting more than twice the votes of its closest competitor, GENERAL HOSPITAL. Shane and Kimberly (Charles Shaughnessy and Patsy Pease) were crowned Favorite Supercouple.

In prime-time, KNOTS LANDING grabbed most of the awards. Even two-time Outstanding Villainess Joan Collins (Alexis, DYNASTY) went home empty-handed when Donna Mills (Abby, KL) was crowned the new queen of mean.

The awards aired in a TV special hosted by Susan Lucci (Erica, ALL MY CHILDREN) and Kevin Dobson (Mack, KL)...
