On April 10, 1985, General Hospital introduced fans to Finola Hughes’s mysterious new alter ego, Anna Devane, and quickly made her mark on the world of Port Charles. Over the years, Anna has been in some memorable romances, distinguished herself as a badass law enforcer, bounced back from presumed death and more. On the 40th anniversary of her debut, Soap Opera Digest takes a look back at some of the memorable storyline moments Anna has anchored over the years.   1. Robert anna
    ABC
    Shortly after Anna arrived on the scene in 1985, viewers learned of her previous marriage to fellow WSB agent Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers).

    Also in 1985, Anna revealed that she had given birth to Robert's daughter, the adorable and precocious Robin (Kimberly McCullough).

  3. Finola Hughes, Ian Buchanan

    In 1987, Anna said, "I do" to dashing Duke Lavery (Ian Buchanan). Robert walked her down the aisle, and Bobbie, Felicia, Robin, Terry and Tiffany made up her bridal party.

    The year 1988 was a rough one in Anna's life; not only was she held hostage by psycho Grant (Brian Patrick Clarke), but Olivia Jerome — who wanted Duke for herself — pushed Anna down an elevator shaft, causing her to miscarry.

    Duke's presumed death in 1989 was devastating to Anna. Little did she know, he'd actually gone into Witness Protection, and later that year, he resurfaced in Port Charles with a new face and name, Jonathan Paget (Greg Beecroft). Tragedy struck again when Julian shot "Jonathan" dead not long after Anna realized his true identity.

    1990 saw the resurfacing of a nefarious foe from Anna's past as a double agent: Cesar Faison (Anders Hove). Faison would prove to be a thorn in Anna's side for many decades.

    Robert and Anna reunited and remarried in 1991. The following year, the lovebirds (along with Faison) were presumed dead in a boat explosion. Mac became Robin's legal guardian.

    Anna turned up alive in 2001 — on All My Children. In Pine Valley, she had an emotional reunion with her daughter. Also in residence there? Anna's twin, Dr. Alexandra Devane Marick.

    Anna was briefly married to Dr. David Hayward (Vincent Irizarry) on AMC and left Pine Valley in 2003, after the tragic passing of the duo's young daughter, Leora.

    It wasn't until 2006 that Anna made a visit to General Hospital. During her short-term stay, she not only intersected with Robin, but with fellow "death" survivor Robert.

    During another visit to Port Charles in 2008, Anna and Robert had the pleasure of attending Robin's wedding to her truelove, Patrick Drake. Anna also became a grandmother with the birth of Robin and Patrick's first child, Emma.

    In 2012, Anna returned to spend some quality time with Robin and Emma (Brooklyn Rae Silzer). Shortly thereafter, Robin was presumed dead in a lab explosion, sending Anna reeling.

    Faison returned in 2012 to woo Anna — by passing himself off as a back-from-the-dead Duke, thanks to a high-tech Duke mask! In the end, Faison was busted, and Anna reunited with the real McCoy — er, Lavery. (It turns out, the man who died in her arms back in 1990 was a Duke impostor.)

    After an arduous search, Anna and Robert finally tracked down a very much alive, kidnapped Robin in 2013 and enjoyed an emotional reunion with their daughter.

    Anna grieved all over again in 2015, when Duke was gunned down (for real, this time) by Carlos Rivera on orders from Julian Jerome. In retaliation, she shot and seemingly killed Carlos, but he turned up alive months later.

    Alex, Anna's twin, took over her life for a stretch in 2017 and stashed Anna in a hospital overseas. Anna ultimately escaped and busted her scheming sis at the airport. Also that year, Anna began a romance with quirky Dr. Hamilton Finn.

    When Faison was killed in 2018, Anna paid a visit to his corpse and revealed that she had secretly given birth to his child. In time, she discovered that Henrik Faison, aka Peter August, was her son. Later on, she learned that Peter was actually Alex's child — her twin's memories had been implanted into her via a memory-mapping protocol known as The Anamnesis Project.

    At Anna's aborted wedding to Finn (Michael Easton) in 2021, the truth about Peter's maternity was revealed. Finn and Anna called ultimately called it quits over her secret-keeping.

    Felicia clobbered Peter over the head with a tire iron in 2022, and instead of summoning help, Anna watched her evildoing nephew take his dying breath.

    Anna and Valentin consummated their long-simmering attraction in 2022 as they sought to take down his diabolical father, Victor Cassadine.

    In 2023, Anna shot an intruder in her home, and was horrified to discover that the victim was Valentin's young daughter, Charlotte (Scarlett Fernandez).

    Anna and Jason (Steve Burton, r.) went overseas in search of Lucky in 2024, getting entangled with international criminal Sidwell (Carlo Rota) in the process. They made it out alive by the skin of their teeth.

    In addition to her various crimefighting endeavors, Anna is staying on her toes in 2025 thanks to her granddaughter, Emma (Braedyn Bruner), whose social justice crusade on behalf of the Quartermaines recently landed in her in trouble with the law.
