An Intervention Was Held For Katherine On Young and Restless And Other July 5 Events In Soap History

In 1994, General Hospital’s Ned (Wally Kurth) was blackmailed into marrying Katherine (Mary Beth Evans), despite that fact that he had recently tied the knot with Lois (Rena Sofer). Lois, of course, was in the dark about this and knew Ned only as his rocker alter ego, Eddie Maine. When Lois discovered Ned's trickery, she divorced him, but the two remarried in 1995. At the time of the storyline, Kurth and Sofer were romantically linked in real life and poised to marry. Mary Beth Evans recalled of the on-screen love triangle between the three to Soap Opera Digest in 2023, "I remember we did a cover for Soap Opera Digest with Rena and me in wedding dresses. I said to Wally, ‘This isn’t fair because you guys are getting married in real life. You’re going to pick her, I know it [laughs].’ "

In 1999, Passions premiered on NBC. The brainchild of Creator James E. Reilly, the show was a fixture on NBC through September 7, 2007 on NBC, then moved to DirecTV from September 17, 2007 until August 7, 2008. Set in the New England town of Harmony, Passions centered around four core families — the Cranes, the Lopez-Fitzgeralds, the Russells and the Bennetts . It was known for its colorful characters, outrageous storylines and inclusion of supernatural elements and developed a cult following among soap fans. Its original cast featured current daytimers Brook Kerr (Portia, General Hospital) as Whitney Russell and Galen Gering (Rafe, Days of Our Lives) as Luis Lopez-Fitzgerald, while Eric Martsolf (Eric, DAYS) joined the Harmony ranks in 2002 in the recast role of Ethan Crane.

In 2002, Stephanie Gatschet (pictured with Tom Pelphrey as Jonathan Randall) debuted on Guiding Light as Tammy Layne. She assumed the recast (and aged) role from Katie Sagona, who had played Tammy since 1997. Gatschet remained with the show until the character's death in 2007.

In 2004 on Young and Restless, Katherine Chancellor's (Jeanne Cooper) loved ones staged an intervention for her, hoping to get her to face her alcoholism and get sober again. Much to the shock of her friends and family, an inebriated Katherine greeted them with a party, replete with food and drinks, and raised a glass to her guests ("Here's to you!"), declaring that she viewed the event as a celebration. Those who were gathered there were understandably alarmed, and even when her son, Brock, and granddaughter, Mac, spoke from the heart about the emotional damage Kay's drinking had caused, she refused to get back on the wagon.

In 2006, Dusty Donovan (Grayson McCouch) and Jennifer Munson (Jennifer Ferrin) exchange vows on her deathbed on As The World Turns as family members including her mother, Barbara Ryan (Colleen Zenk, far. l.), and brother, Paul Ryan (Roger Howarth, second from l.) looked on. Before long, Jennifer tragically succumbed to cardio myopathy, the result of viral pneumonia.
