Five Things That Happened On December 19 In Soap History

In 1983, Beth Raines (Beth Chamberlin) and Phillip Spaulding (Grant Aleksander) fled to New York City on Guiding Light. Beth was in Annabelle Reardon's classroom; Phillip showed up late and passed Beth a note, frantic to let her know that things were not what they appeared to be between him and Mindy Lewis. Beth's mother, Lillian, arrived with Beth's abusive stepfather, Bradley Raines, but Lillian began protesting when she realized that Bradley had also summoned a cop. With help from Rick, Phillip threw a chair through the classroom window, grabbed Beth and escaped! The duo then made their way to Manhattan.

In 1991, Steve Burton made his General Hospital debut as Jason Quartermaine. Prior to landing the role, Burton had held a short-term role on Days of Our Lives, Harris Michaels. The actor recalled to Soap Opera Digest in 2013, "My first audition was actually for AJ, and I was too young. They hired Gerald Hopkins, and they were going to bring Jason in several months later." After landing the job, he said of his first day, "All I remember is I was super-nervous and I probably talked way too fast. Back in the day when I would get nervous, my voice would get really high-pitched."

In 2000, Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) left Ned Ashton (Wally Kurth) at the altar on General Hospital. Alexis's cold feet were getting chillier by the moment as she made her way down the aisle, and her mounting fears over becoming a member of the Quartermaine clan came to a boil by the time she reached her groom. Alexis suddenly panicked, turned around and ran out of the church as quickly as she could. As Emily tried to comfort a heartbroken Ned, Helena smirked triumphantly and Alan tried to save face, thanking the guests for coming and sending them home.

In 2006, Phyllis Summers Newman (Michelle Stafford) gave birth to her daughter with Nicholas Newman (Joshua Morrow), Summer, on Young and Restless. When Phyllis first learned she was pregnant, there was a question as to the paternity of the unborn child, with both Nick and Jack Abbott as contenders. Nick was proven to be the dad, but when Phyllis went into labor while trapped in an elevator with Jack, it was Jack who helped deliver the baby girl.

In 2011, One Life to Live's Roxy Balsom (Ilene Kristen, r.) dreamed that she was a character on her favorite soap, Fraternity Row. In the dream sequence, Roxy was Lorraine King, and David Vickers (Tuc Watkins, r.) was Lorraine's husband, Durwood, freshly back from the dead. Clint Buchanan (Jerry verDorn) and Viki Lord (Erika Slezak) were the butler and maid, Gregor and Gilda. Multiple other OLTL characters appeared within the soap, as well, including Todd Manning as Lorraine's half brother, Dash, and John McBain and Natalie Buchanan as incestuous college kids Brandon and Briana.
