Yvonna Wright: The Wright Image
Weekly catches up with GUIDING LIGHT’s Yvonna Wright as she celebrates her first NAACP Image Awards nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Daytime Drama Series, and dishes Mel’s new partnership with Jeffrey.
Soap Opera Weekly: Congratulations on your 2007 nomination.
Yvonna Wright: I am so excited about it. It was really a surprise to me. I thought for sure the [nomination announcements] were over, so it was a shock when I got the call. I screamed. My mom was in town, and my sisters. My mom was like, “What’s wrong?” It’s the biggest thing that’s happened to me in this business, so it’s a good way to start the new year. I’ve been to a lot of these award shows with my husband because he’s been in the music business and also owns his own advertising agency. I’ve gone on his arm, so it will be nice to now go as a nominee.
Weekly: Where were you when you found out?
Wright: I was in my bathroom. I wasn’t on the toilet or anything, but I was looking in the mirror doing my hair.
Weekly: How does the nomination process work?
Wright: GUIDING LIGHT called me and asked, “Do you want to submit yourself?” I said, “Yes.” Then they really did all the work. They cut together the scenes. It was actually [producer] Maria Macina that did that. I didn’t even look at it. She just sent it in and that was it.
Weekly: What did you submit?
Wright: The break-up scenes with Mel and Rick. They also put in the catfight scenes with Beth and another scene with Mel’s daughter where she was crying after the break-up.
Weekly: Are you looking forward to going to Los Angeles for the ceremony?
Wright: I’m very excited. It’s got to be a short trip because I’ve got to get back to the kids, but it will be fun and hopefully my husband can come as well.
Weekly: Who do you want to meet?
Wright: I went online and I can’t tell you how many people are going to be out there that I would love to meet: Beyoncé:, John Legend, a whole list of people. It’s the whole world of African-Americans in the entertainment business.
Weekly: What will you wear?
Wright: I’m sure the wardrobe department here will help me.
Weekly: Let’s talk about GL. Rick has been making an effort to reconcile with Mel. Is that a possibility?
Wright: It’s always a possibility. It’s going to be more interesting if it doesn’t happen, as far as stories go. It would be cool for them to continue the feisty friendship that they’ve had, even at the end of their marriage. There’s a lot more storyline potential if Rick goes off with Beth and Mel searches for her new lover. If they do get back together, they’ll probably get back into that steady couple routine. It’s fun to have something else go on with them.
Weekly: Are you enjoying this new business venture for Mel and Jeffrey?
Wright: I’m hoping it will take off in more ways than one. It would be great to have Mel and Jeffrey go into business together and even have Mel pursue him. That would be fun to play.
Weekly: What is it like working with Bradley Cole (Jeffrey)?
Wright: It’s great. He’s very professional and serious about his work. He’s a good person. We both are with the same agent, so we’ve had that connection.
