Young and Restless’s Courtney Hope Explains Why Sally Is Sticking By Billy (Exclusive)
Billy has proven not to be the most reliable partner, both in business and romance, on Young and Restless. He convinced Sally to work alongside him at Abbott Communications and then left her to run the fledgling media company on her own while he focused on teaming up with Cane to get Chancellor back from Victor. She even briefly tried breaking up with Billy, but he convinced her to give him another shot. And even now, she continues to stick by him. Why? “Well, for a lot of reasons, I think,” her portrayer, Courtney Hope, tells Soap Opera Digest. “First of all, she really cares about Billy; she’s grown to really care for him and who he is, and his fight for what he believes in, his passion. Sally sees herself in that.”
To the Rescue
According to Hope, Sally’s devotion to Billy is also deeply rooted in her own upbringing. “She’s had a really rough life and childhood, and always wants the family that she never had and the relationship she never had,” the actress notes. “So I think all of that just keeps her fighting to save the people around her. When she was younger, she would lose them. I think it makes her even more of a fighter to want to save the people that she’s with. It’s just doubling down on really caring about someone, but also not wanting him to go off the rails.”
The actress points out that despite their various problems, Sally and Billy have had some very good times together. “She sees the best in people,” Hope says. “And she feels like she has some stake in the outcome if she can really invest herself into the relationship and possibly help and/or save them. So that’s a huge reason. And also, he believes in her, and she really likes who she is when they’re good. So she wants to fight for that.”
But Sally will certainly have her work cut out for her if she is going to try to keep Billy in line. “For sure!” Hope laughs. “But, you know, it’s not like she hasn’t done it before. That’s her thing. Like, she was trying to keep Adam in line, and now Billy. I don’t know, I feel like she likes to multitask! She likes to take on projects. She doesn’t know how to rest.”
Mirror Mirror
The old adage says that it’s opposites that attract, but in Sally and Billy’s case, they are very much the same in that they are both very driven people who will do whatever it takes to achieve their goals .”Yeah, they are,” Hope nods. “And, in my eyes, it’s been fun to play because they are so similar. But their tactics are a bit different, and how they execute that passion and that fight for whatever dream it is.
“So that’s what’s been so interesting,” she continues. “She can understand why he wants it, for example, Chancellor. To prove [himself] to his mom, but then also to have something for himself. She can relate to that one hundred percent. But the way they do it is different. So that’s been kind of fun to play, because it’s really forcing her to let go or challenge her to let go of control, to say, ‘Hey, you know your way isn’t the only way.’ And that doesn’t mean that one is right or wrong, but in her eyes, she’s like, ‘No. This could be harmful. This is wrong.’ So it’s been kind of fun to watch her play with that, because it’s not like she thinks what he’s doing is completely crazy, but the way that he’s doing it is crazy. That’s the funny part.”
