They’ve Got The Look
1. Katherine Meets Jill, 1974
Once upon a time, these rivals-turned argumentative mother/daughter duo were friends. And it was cosmetics that brought them together. Kay was a regular at the beauty salon where hairdresser Jill worked. Sensing that Jill longed for a better life, lonely older woman Kay hired Jill to be her personal hairdresser, maid and companion. Of course, the ladies soon began fighting over men and, well, everything else under the sun, but both have always looked fab while doing so.2. Veiled Vanessa Prentiss, 1976
Rescuing son Lance from a fire left Vanessa scarred, so she hid her disfigurement behind a veil. When Lance’s wife, Lorie, accused Van of faking her injuries, Vanessa lifted her veil to reveal her true face. Lorie then insisted that Vanessa had refused to get surgery so she could hang onto her son. Vanessa finally did get her face repaired when her husband, Lucas, returned to town.
3. Kay’s Face-lift, 1984
Long before EXTREME MAKEOVER or THE SWAN ended up on the air, Jeanne Cooper became a reality TV pioneer. When she elected to have a face-lift, it was written into Kay’s storyline; the actress then had the real-life surgery shown on-screen.
4. Marge Takes Over Kay’s Life, 1989-90
Ex-con Clint Raddison plotted to steal Katherine’s fortune by making over waitress Marge Cotrooke to look like Kay and take over her life. As she attempted to be Kay, friends and family worried about “Kay’s” odd behavior. Still, Marge managed to seduce Kay’s husband, Rex. Meanwhile, the real Kay and Esther were kidnapped by Clint’s goons. After Brock caught on to Marge’s ruse, Marge eventually helped Kay escape. Kay then returned home, only to discover that Rex and Jill were now married.
5. David Kimble Is “Branded,” 1991
Upon learning that her murderous husband, David, planned to kill her and take her money, Nina shot David five times. He survived, but she was arrested for attempted murder. At the hospital, he faked his death, then headed to a plastic surgeon to alter his appearance. “Could you make me look like David Hasselhoff?” he requested. Instead, the surgeon carved “Killer” into David’s forehead. This didn’t faze Kimble too much; he eventually donned a disguise and posed as “Jim.”
6. Y&R’s Masquerade Ball, 1991
We always love an elaborate gala on soaps, and Y&R’s makeup/costume department went all out to dress up the cast for the show’s exquisite ball. Smilin’ Jack as Prince Charming? Check. Man-eater Jill as Cleopatra? Yep. Plus, there was the added excitement of the aforementioned David/Jim showing up in costume and shooting Chris, Nina and Danny (the bullets turned out to be fake). Later, David ducked into what he thought was a closet while trying to escape from Paul Williams — but instead walked into a trash compactor and was crushed to death.
7. Tuvia Vs. Safra, 2003
Jabot planned to purchase a makeup line geared to African-American women called Satine, but Newman bought it out from under them and renamed it Safra. Jabot retaliated by creating a competitive line, Tuvia. In order to ruin Jabot and Jack, Victor hired Michael Baldwin to bribe the retailers into giving Safra the front shelf space that normally showcased Jabot’s products. Vic was eventually turned in to the feds by his son, Nick, for his shady business practices.
8. Brittany Is Nearly Electrocuted, 2004
Rich gal Brittany craved attention — and found it when she began singing and stripping using the alias “Marilyn” at Bobby Marsino’s club, Marsino’s. Her new gig turned dangerous when Bobby’s mob associates rigged the stripper pole so that Brit was zapped onstage. Though she survived, Brit suffered severe burns and was left with scars. Her boyfriend at the time, Raul, found a plastic surgeon to restore her good looks, but by then, she’d fallen for Bobby.
9. Dru’s Hairy Encounter, 2004
While working for Jabot, Drucilla decided to test the company’s new hair straightener. It worked — but then her hair fell out. Needless to say, Dru promptly quit her job and signed on at Jabot’s rival company, Newman Enterprises. 10. Sheila Poses As Phyllis, 2007
Before skulking out of town in early 2006, a presumed-dead Sheila headed to a plastic surgeon and asked to be made over to resemble a mystery person. Fast-forward a year and it turned out that she now looked exactly like rival Lauren and Michael’s good pal Phyllis! Paul tried to keep the menace away from the Baldwins and their newborn son by imprisoning her in a warehouse, but it didn’t take long for Michael and Maggie to catch on to his plan. Eventually, Sheila tricked Maggie into releasing her and made a beeline for Phyllis’s home, where she kidnapped her, plus Phyllis and Lauren’s kids. Lauren managed to track them down and killed her longtime nemesis.
