The Young and the Restless Star Billy Flynn on Cane Using ‘Wild Card’ Phyllis (Exclusive)
To say that Cane and Phyllis’s relationship on Young and Restless is a roller coaster would be an understatement. But Billy Flynn tells Soap Opera Digest that he’s having a blast in his scenes with Michelle Stafford. “I love the way that she works,” he declares. “It’s ultimately the way I work, which is sort of just spontaneous. There’s nothing really planned with Michelle, and that’s always the way I am. I don’t have any of these moments or beats planned out, so you just kind of get to go along for the ride. I absolutely love it. It’s a wild ride with that one!”
Dream Team
While they seem an unlikely pairing, Cane and Phyllis do have some goals that align and put them on the same side. “I think with Cane and Phyllis, what they’re trying to achieve, they’re both kind of underdogs,” Flynn notes. “Same with Billy [Jason Thompson], and that’s why I like the teaming of the three of them, because they feel like sort of the outcasts trying to make things right in their own way. I think they have almost this kind of [similar] goal — I just think Phyllis is more of an anarchist when it comes to doing it!”
Describing his Y&R alter ego as a “good guy who can be ruthless when he needs to be,” Flynn believes that Cane and Phyllis can work well together when the need arises, even if they aren’t always entirely on the same page. “The way Phyllis goes about things, I don’t think Cane is okay with,” he explains. “And you’ll see moments as we move forward where it’s clear he’s not going to stop her, because I think ultimately, he’s using what she is to his benefit right now. She’s just his wild card that is kind of a means to an end.”
While Phyllis can prove a formidable ally, the risk you run with her is getting on her bad side and finding yourself the target of her ire. Though Flynn is confident that Cane has what it takes to win a war, if that’s how it ultimately shakes out. “Can he beat Phyllis?” the actor muses. “Yeah, I think he can. But you know, to what end, I don’t know. Because with somebody like Phyllis, is the fight ever going to be over?”
For the time being, Phyllis is a useful weapon and shield for Cane, and therefore, he’s going to do whatever it takes to not give her any reason to turn against him. “He’s going to keep making up with her and keep her around,” Flynn says, “I think as long as she can be useful to what his objective is.”
