Sofia Mattsson Exits General Hospital As Sasha Leaves Port Charles, Reunites With Robert
General Hospital has confirmed the exit of Sofia Mattsson, who began playing the role of Sasha Gilmore back in September 2018. On her final episode, which aired on July 18, 2025, the character headed to France with the baby girl she shares with Michael, Daisy, and reunited with her father, Robert Scorpio (Tristan Rogers). “There was a good time in the storyline for Sofia to leave to pursue other opportunities in film and TV,” a rep for GH told TV Insider. “But she is open for a return in the future.”
Fond Farewell
Sharing those final scenes with Rogers made the actress’s GH exit extra memorable. “It was special because normally we don’t always shoot in order,” Mattsson told TV Insider, “but my last scenes that aired were actually filmed last. And, of course, it was special that they were with Tristan. I really loved how sweet those scenes were.”
The actress also shared that her last day was “emotional, for sure. Cleaning out my room and knowing that I wouldn’t see all my friends there like usual every other day felt sad. But everyone was so supportive and excited for me.” Mattsson added, “I’ve had such a great time, but I’m also excited for a new chapter and to continue my acting journey in new projects.”
The Swedish-born actress landed her Port Charles role several years after the first time she’d auditioned for GH. “I was not really ready; I totally understand why it didn’t go further then,” she admitted to Soap Opera Digest.
When the part of Sasha — who was introduced as a young woman that Valentin Cassadine paid to pretend to be Nina Reeves’s long-lost daughter — came around, she recalled, “I went in and I did feel ready and I felt like I could handle it. It was obviously very nerve-wracking, still!”
At the time, the character was not intended to stick around long-term. As Mattsson noted to Digest, “At first, I was recurring. I really thought I was going to be there for, like, three episodes. I think my character, Sasha, only thought she was going to be in town for a moment, too!” When GH kept asking her back for more episodes, she said, “It was a shock! I kind of kept going and getting more and more relationships in town. Every time I got an episode, I was so happy and grateful to be back.”
Eventually, she inked her first long-term contract. “I definitely wanted to stay,” she explained to Digest. “And I was lucky at that point to really know what I was signing up for. Normally, if you test for a contract [role], you don’t really know what you’re getting yourself into, but I obviously knew, so it was a no-brainer. Everybody is amazing over there. I really love it. I didn’t have to think hard.”
Mattsson’s years on the show have been significant for her not only professionally, but personally, as well: She and her husband, Thomas Payton, welcomed two children, a son and a daughter, and she also became a U.S. citizen.
