Sharon Case and Michelle Stafford Preview Y&R’s Special Sharon/Phyllis Episode

The Best Of Frenemies: Sharon Case (Sharon) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) take center stage in a special episode set to air on Tuesday, February 25.
Sharon and Phyllis found themselves in quite the pickle at the end of the Monday, February 24 episode of The Young & The Restless: the longtime enemies were kidnapped together! Sharon Case (Sharon) and Michelle Stafford (Phyllis) will be the focus of a special episode airing on Tuesday, February 25, as their characters try to figure who abducted them… and why!
When the longtime co-stars previewed the upcoming episode to TV Insider, Stafford admitted that she didn’t initially connect the dots that she and Case would be the hour’s sole focus. “I was going over the dialogue and was like, ‘This is a lot.’ And then I realized, ‘Oh, wait, we’re the only two in the show,’ ” she shared. “So, I didn’t know it until a couple days beforehand. I was just memorizing it.”
Filmed over the course of three days, the material was emotional and high stakes, and Case marveled at the fact that she and Stafford were in sync through it all. “Everything seemed so easy and fell right into place,” she reported. “Maybe we’ve been working together for so long, but we just slid into it without questions. We didn’t even have to discuss it. It’s like we read each other’s minds, or we’re just on the same page. As storylines go, I love this one. I had a lot of fun doing it. I love working with Michelle.” Pronounced Case, “We did the impossible some days.”
Playing the scenes where Sharon and Phyllis try to piece together what happened to them, Stafford had one thought that kept running through her mind. She explained, “I kept on trying not to get too literal about it but really imagine if you were kidnapped and put in a room and you had been drugged. You probably think the next thing is you’re going to be raped and murdered or tortured and chopped up. So, I kept on being like, ‘Don’t we think we’re gonna die?’ ” To that end, she nodded, “we were playing that it is our last moment of life.”
Case added that at times, Sharon and Phyllis work with each other… and at others, they are very much against one another during their captivity. “We felt like the characters thought, ‘Maybe we are supposed to work together.’ And sometimes they feel the opposite, that this is an every-man-for-themselves situation, which is very real,” the actress mused. “Over the course of the entire storyline, we’re put in a lot of rough situations, we go through every different kind of emotion and our relationship changes over and over.”
The plot twist comes as the two characters are struggling to find a way to move past Sharon believing she’d killed Heather — and letting Phyllis’s son, Daniel, take the blame for the murder. “There was nowhere for Phyllis and Sharon to go; it was the apex of their discord,” summed up Stafford. “Something had to happen from that. There’s no way Phyllis is ever going to say, ‘Oh, it’s okay that you hid the bloody towels. I’m over it.’ And no way that Sharon is going to be okay with not being forgiven and just moving on. When they see each other, it would be difficult. So, I think this story that we’re doing really fixes that.”
Case teased that the twists and turns in the unexpected storyline will propel Sharon and Phyllis forward. (Dare they even become friends?!?) “This is really going to be fun and interesting and a great ride for the audience,” she promised. “When [Executive Producer/Head Writer] Josh Griffith writes this way, it’s a treat.”
