“Only Love” Brings Heart to Springfield
Kati Mac wrote her song “Only Love” while searching for peace and understanding after a tragic experience surrounding the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Mac tells Soap Opera Weekly how her song was chosen as the opening theme to GUIDING LIGHT.
Soap Opera Weekly: How did you get hooked up with GL?
Kati Mac: I sent them some of my music, and it was one of those cases where my song went across the right desk at the right time. I believe Ellen‘s [Wheeler, executive producer] children liked the song, so I think that’s how it happened.
Weekly: That’s awesome! Did you write the song specifically for the show?
Mac: I didn’t, actually. I was listening to John Lennon‘s “Give Peace a Chance”, which is why I reference it at the end, and I was inspired by that. It was right after 9/11, and I had just watched from across the street all of these people jumping from the building. I had to run for my life, and the response that it made me have was that this is so wrong to do this to another human being, especially to civilians who are just going about their daily lives and aren’t in a war situation.
Weekly: It sounds like writing the song was therapeutic for you.
Mac: I know other people had the reaction of, “Let’s go over and kick their butts,” but my reaction was that we have to stop all of this aggressive behavior toward one another now. Quite frankly, [the Bible] says, “Thou shalt not kill.” Period. There’s no “except if they…” or “only when…” So that’s why I wrote that song.
Weekly: Where can fans hear more of your music?
Mac: My latest CD is called Poseidon’s Son. That’s the album “Only Love” is from. The album is about my recovery [after] being traumatized from the 9/11 incident.
Weekly: How has it been since your music has been featured on GL?
Mac: It’s been phenomenal! It’s so much fun. [More] people come to the Web site. I turned “Only Love” into a ringtone, and I get requests for it every day. I love it. It’s so great.
Weekly: Are you a fan of the show?
Mac: I actually really love the show, so I have a great time. They use some of my other songs, as well, so I’m watching it to find inspiration for songs now, and it’s fun. They are a nice group of people, and they’ve made me feel very welcome. It’s a blast…and my mother likes it!
