GL: Playtime With Pelphrey
GUIDING LIGHT’s Jonathan is back in Springfield with baby Sarah — and a few of his old bad habits.
In one week, he has nearly knocked someone over the head, drugged an unsuspecting victim and run off with Sarah again. Though all of his intended bad deeds were only close calls, Tom Pelphrey (Jonathan) is having a blast getting into a little trouble. “I love it,” chuckles Pelphrey. “We have so much fun with everything.”
Pelphrey has been offscreen since last August, when Jonathan popped up in Springfield to check on Reva after Dylan’s accident. Pelphrey admits to laying low during his time away from GL, so he’s glad to be back in action. “While I was away, I hung out and did a few random jobs,” remarks Pelphrey. “I didn’t do much. I hadn’t watched the show since I left, [so] it’s great to be back.”
Though Pelphrey enjoys being busy on set, he notes that coming back as a character everyone thought was dead proved to be a somewhat awkward transition. “Things have to happen really fast,” he explains. “Soon after I get back, they have [the story] pick up, like, ‘Oh, my God! You’re alive?’ We had these scenes with Ricky Paull Goldin (Gus), and he’d say, ‘Are we going to address the fact that I thought you were dead?’ and [the-powers-that-be said] no, so Ricky would come in and do a double-take and start talking. It’s been kind of funny.”
The laughs don’t stop there. According to Pelphrey, Daniel Cosgrove (Bill) has been responsible for tons of side-splitting since he returned. “Every day I work with Danny there’s a hilarious outtake,” reveals Pelphrey. “The other day we were doing a scene and we were supposed to be angry at each other, so we were straight-faced. All of a sudden, Danny pulls a huge roll of duct tape out of the inside of his jacket and he says, ‘Shut the door so we can get real.'”
Talk about a challenge! But that’s what Pelphrey loves about being back on board. “It’s just one of the many funny things we do,” he laughs, adding, “I love these people!”
