Is GH The Next Soap to Go?
Soap fans still licking their wounds over the recent cancellations of ALL MY CHILDREN and ONE LIFE TO LIVE may not have seen the end of the Alphabet Network's axings. Media outlets are reporting that ABC is thisclose to inking a $20 million deal with Katie Couric, which would give her a one hour, five-day-a-week talk show, set to begin in September of 2012. Couric would also be reporting to the ABC news division in addition to her duties. If the deal goes through, GENERAL HOSPITAL, daytime's longest running soap on the air and the last one standing on ABC, may be scrapped to make way for the chatfest. However, GH could be spared if the network drops one of the two existing shows set to replace the canceled soaps, THE CHEW, which will premiere in September when AMC ends, or THE REVOLUTION, set to take OLTL's place in January. An official announcement is expected in the coming weeks. A GH spokesperson had, "No comment at this time."
