General Hospital’s Willow Confesses: ‘She Doesn’t Necessarily Feel Proud,’ Says Katelyn MacMullen (Excl)

In a shocking moment at the end of the February 5 episode of General Hospital, Willow made a huge confession to her husband, Drew, as he lay in bed, unable to move or speak after she injected him last month with a drug that mimicked the effects of a stroke. “It was me,” she announced, her tone icy and her eyes flashing with rage. “I’m the one who shot you!” Soap Opera Digest checked in with Katelyn MacMullen (Willow) about her character’s increasingly risky behavior.

Regrets, I’ve Had A Few

Shooting her now-spouse in the back two times last year, then following it up with January’s stabbing incident, don’t exactly seem like the actions of someone who is overflowing with remorse. But in MacMullen’s view, there is a grain of truth in the big show she’s been putting on about how upset she is by Drew’s condition. “I think part of her is devastated that this is happening, or that it has to happen,” the actress offers. “She doesn’t necessarily feel proud of what she’s been doing, but she’s felt like she’s kind of had no choice because she’s in survival mode. She believes that [with Drew in the picture], she’s not safe and no one around her is safe, either.”

But does she actually want him dead? “At first I thought she was doing all of this to try to kill him,” MacMullen muses. “And I do think there’s a part of her that might have even wanted to [do that] to be completely free of him, but now I think she probably just wants him to be incapacitated.”

Mission accomplished on that front, and now she’s got Drew right where she wants him: powerless. With Drew out of commission for all intents and purposes, what comes next? “I think maybe her goal is, ‘Okay, once I get all my ducks in a row and I’m able to rebuild my life, then I can bring him back to the world.'”

Judging by her actions earlier this week, trying to make sure that her ex, Michael, goes down for Drew’s shooting is a key part of that “rebuilding her life” agenda, no pun intended. In the middle of a meeting to discuss custody of their two kids, Willow slipped a key to Drew’s house onto Michael’s key ring, which could certainly help the PCPD build a case against him. Despite this major move, MacMullen doesn’t believe that Willow wants to see Michael rot in jail. “He is her children’s father at the end of the day,” she notes. “I think it’s more that from her perspective, she never believes that anything will ever happen to Michael legally. Even if [making him look guilty of Drew’s shooting] isn’t the best thing, she knows that he is so protected by his family that she is fairly confident that nothing is ever really going to happen to him. Even if the blame was directed at him for a little while, she knows that he would safely get out of it. At least that’s what she believes wholeheartedly. Any retaliation towards him is sort of like, ‘Okay, now we’re even. Nothing really bad is ever going to happen to you, but at least I kind of feel like we’re even.'”

It remains to be seen just how many more tricks Willow has up her sleeve — and while that means it’s likely too soon to be talking about redemption, MacMullen says that she’s certainly curious to know if Willow can come back from all this. “What she’s gone through, I’m sure it’s going to change her,” she acknowledges. “But it will be interesting to see what the writers think, and we’ll see, right? We’ll see if she’s able to take what she’s learned and maybe make positive changes … or not! It will just be interesting to see where this journey takes her.”

And there’s certainly precedent on GH for characters walking around free after committing outrageous crimes — think Ric holding pregnant Carly hostage in a panic room or Nina inducing Ava’s early labor and stealing newborn Avery or Kristina trying to kill Ava by cutting the brakes on her car and nearly doing in Ric and Liz instead, to name but a few examples. “I’ve read about so many different storylines that people have had over the years and I’m like, ‘Wow, on a soap opera, really anything is possible!'” MacMullen says. “We do some crazy stuff in Port Charles — and I love it [laughs]!”
